Review
⚔General (cast/story/music)
This movie has a very pleasant fairy tale feeling and is a most comforting watch. I enjoyed the reference to the book in the way the movie is narrated.
I found the cast marvellous for every actor made their character believable. When they were scared or doubting, so was I and I found myself scared of the possibility of a bad ending more than once.
The story in itself is quite simple. It follows the traditionnal theme of the captured princess who has to be rescued but goes beyond that trope, making it more actual and enjoyable for children as well as for adults. Some themes are very interesting to pursue the reflexion after watching the movie, such as vengeance and what one can do after achieving their life objective.
A fascinating thing about movies is the way they end. The last shot is sometimes the key to the whole movie and so is the last « as you wish » that ties the whole movie alltogether.
The music is very pleasing and serves the overall aesthetic of the movie very well.
⚔Characters
The characters are very well constructed. Each one of them has its own story, past and hopes for the future and can be therefore relatable to the public. They deal with real problems in a most captivating thought-inducing approach.
I very much enjoyed the large palette of personalities this movie has to offer. There is not two characters with the same personality, each one is singular. The princess also has a personality, and so does Fezzik (I was glad to see a giant whose role is not solely reduced to being strong and able to fight for once).
Prince Humperdink is somehow reminiscent of Lord Farquaad both on his physical appearance and dramatic personality. This blog entry being solely dedicated to The Princess Bride I will not dive deeper into this comparison but this article is quite pleasing if you desire to deepen this subject (the comment section is also available).
⚔Humor
The Princess Bride can be considered a parody of fairy tales movies. I found the use of cliché tropes such as the damsel in distress, the over-the-top duel, the perfect hero, the unfallible vilain and the idealized true love to be quite appealing for they are used in a very cunning and humorous way. The humour is unconceivably good and will probably make me come back to this movie.
⚔Colours
The colours of this movie are very pleasing to look at. They create a really comforting atmosphere that suits the story well. Buttercup's red dress is a very interesting choice when taking into account the mostly green environment she evolves in when wearing it. Red and green being complementary colors, it emphasizes both the landscape and Buttercup's presence.
