“I love you.”

“That’s what you said last time.”

The silence that fell between them was as bitter and cold as she felt, hugging herself tightly. In the 4 years they had been together-if she could even call it that-this had been a recurring theme.

But this had been the straw that broke the camels back.

Sighing, she glanced at her phone, then up at him, giving him a long, tired look. “Jake, I’m tired and I have work in the morning. Just... Leave me alone.” She turned, ready to head back into her apartment, eat some ice cream and cry herself to sleep, again. It was all she had the strength for after everything came to light.

“Kay--”

“NO!” She shouted suddenly, her voice echoing in the hall way, her body now tense and trembling. “No, just fuck off, Jake. I’m so fucking tired of this back and forth!” Her breathing was hard, her eyes stinging with tears she refused to shed in front of him. Because if she did, she would take him back.

Taking a deep breath, though it was more like a pitiful sniffle, she turned to him, studying her now ex; He still looked amazing, his blond hair and jaw that could cut diamonds, his hazel eyes that looked hurt as they did confused. But she knew better. It was an act. It always was.

“Jake, I need someone who will love me and want to be with me,” she began, holding her hand up when he began, “someone who will come and meet my parents finally, someone who will plan a future with me. We’re not kids anymore, we’re not... Actions have consequences and you keep forgetting that fact.” Pocketing her hands, she shook her head, giving him a rueful smile, her eye hard and void of any affection anymore. “I’m done.”

She watched him stand there, clearly taken back, and though her chest burned, her shoulders felt lighter. Too bad it had taken her this long to realize it.

There was nothing else to be said, try as he might, but she had finally broken down that barrier where he refused to want to make changes. To continue doing the same shit he always did, because he though the could and there would be no repercussions for him

Letting out a slow breath, she nodded her head, turning to head inside. “Goodbye, Jake.”

She meant it, too.

It had been well over a year since that fateful night, Kaytlyn, also known as Kay, was sitting across the table from her bosses at a lunch meeting, her mind wondering back to Jake. The restaurant chosen was one they had frequented together.

Brushing her red hair behind her ear, she leaned back in her seat, lost in thought.

Dating after him hadn’t been easy. There had been a few attempts, but they were just glorified hookups if she was honest. Kay wouldn’t lie though, the sex had been good.

“Miss Kaytlyn,” a voice came to her.

Blinking, she flushed, smiling. “I’m sorry, what?”

The older man chuckled, lifting a brow. “I was asking if these projections are meeting out standards for launching this new campaign on social media.” Looking down as the man pushed some documents over, she read them carefully, tapping the table in thought.

“The wording needs a little work, Mr Soon,” she said slowly, looking up at her boss, smiling. “Other than that, we can begin to move forwards into the next stages.”

“Excellent. With that settled, we can conclude this and head home for the day.”

Finally!

Humming happily as she packed up her things, politely excusing herself, Kay was grateful she could just head straight home from this. Pulling her phone out, she continued humming, sending a quick text, almost getting a reply just as quick.

‘Hurry home, bed is lonely without you... - A.’

The redhead felt her cheeks heat up, a smile tugging at her lips. Turning as she was exiting the building, she squeaked as she collided with someone.

Stumbling back, she looked up at who she had assaulted, her brown eyes widening at the familiar person before her. Her mouth felt dry. “Jake,” she whispered, taking a small victory of him looking equally as surprised.

In that moment, the world fell away and it was just them, but not like it had been before, with all the bad romance and cheating. Even after everything, she smiled, nodding her head.

“See you around,” she said softly, turning on her heel and walking off in the direction she needed. Kay was sure there would be another time to run into him, but not right now.

20 minutes later, the traffic Gods actually being willing today, Kay walked into her apartment, the smell of pizza and wine in the air. “Hey babe,” she called in greeting, walking into the kitchen, she wrapped her arms around her partners waist, kissing the shorter persons shoulder.

“How was the meeting?” she asked, turning in her grasp, the shorter brunette smiling. “Anything good come out of it?”

Laughing, Kay shrugged, cupping the smaller females cheek. “Meeting went as standard, but I ran into someone on my way out.” She watched her partners eyebrows go up, then the flicker of understanding in those dark brown eyes.

“Jake?”

“Yeah, but I blew him off to come home and be with you.”

There was a small laugh from the shorter woman, her form relaxing, leaning into the hand on her cheek. “You’re an odd one, but that’s what I love about you.”

“That’s what you said last time,” she murmured, closing the distance between their faces, “but that’s why I love you too, Alli.”
