Este es el primer libro de la saga Casteel!
Lei este porque mi abuelita me lo compró en el filven ya que como no encontraba el segundo libro de flores en el ático me dijo "mientras lo conseguimos ten este"

La historia sigue a Heaven Leigh Casteel quien es una niña que vive en la extrema pobreza junto a sus cuatro hermanos, Tom, Fanny, Keith y Jane en lo alto de las montañas de un pueblo, con un padre alcohólico muy cruel y una madrastra explotadara. A pesar de su entorno tan hostil Heaven es una joven con una inteligencia pronunciada, belleza y orgullo admirables para una niña de su edad.
Todo se pone aun mas horrible cuando su madrastra da a luz a su último hijo y este nace sin media cabeza y muerto, poco después de eso ella huye de la cabaña abandonando a sus hijos. El padre de estas criaturas no se le ocurre mejor manera de ganar dinero que VENDER A SUS HIJOS?? Primero vende a los dos mas pequeñitos juntos (Keith y Jane) a una pareja de viejitos que nunca pudieron concebir, a Tom lo mandan con un granjero y ahi lo usan solamente de burro de carga haciendo literalmente explotación infantil, Fanny (Jesucristo como me cae de mal) queda en manos del pastor de la iglesia del pueblo que la crían mas como sirvienta y objeto de desprecio que como a una hija.
A la que le toca mas difícil es a la pobre Heaven, la vendieron de ultimo y por alguna razón la dejan elegir entre dos parejas que la quieren comprar y ella toma la terrible decisión de irse con Kitty y Cal (,,¬﹏¬,,) a Heaven la usan de literalmente esclava y el primer día que llega a esa casa Kitty la baña con agua casi hirviendo para "quitarle los gérmenes" y si no mal recuerdo le pone algo tipo Lysol en su cabello (que a diferencia de sus hermanos el de ella es negro y ondulado y el de los otros es liso y pelirrojo ya que no comparten madre).
Aqui la cosa se pone aun mas turbia porque el matrimonio de Kitty y Cal va de mal a peor entonces Cal genera sentimientos paternos pero a la vez románticos hacia Heaven llegando al punto de que le insisto y logra acostarse con ella??? ( • ᴖ • ｡) Heaven se cansa de todo y decide buscar a su familia materna y logra mudarse con ellos para escapar de esa vida tan horrible que tiene con aquel par de locos y en teoría ahí termina el primer libro con ella pegando la carrera con sus abuelos maternos.
Ay no que horror, a esta autora de verdad le fascina hacer sufrir a los niños de una manera preocupante, se supone que iba a ser un "mientras tanto" y no me iba a pegar tanto a este pero cuando lo terminé y no tenia el segundo para seguirle casi me da algo de la desesperación, esta señora si sabe escribir cosas turbias y deprimentes. 8/10

The story follows Heaven Leigh Casteel, a young girl living in extreme poverty with her four siblings, Tom, Fanny, Keith, and Jane in a mountain village. They have a cruel alcoholic father and an exploitative stepmother. Despite such a hostile environment, Heaven stands out with her sharp intelligence, beauty, and admirable pride for a girl her age.
Things get even more horrific when her stepmother gives birth to her last child, who is born without half his head and already dead. Shortly after, she abandons the cabin, leaving the children behind. Their father then comes up with the “brilliant” idea of making money by SELLING HIS CHILDREN?? First, he sells the two youngest (Keith and Jane) together to an elderly couple who were never able to have kids. Tom is sent to a farmer, where he’s used only as a work mule, literally child exploitation. Fanny (good Lord, how I can’t stand her) ends up in the hands of the village preacher, who raises her more as a servant and object of disdain than as a daughter.
The one who gets it the worst is poor Heaven. She’s sold last, and for some reason she’s allowed to choose between two couples who want to buy her. She makes the terrible decision of going with Kitty and Cal (,,╥﹏╥,,) Heaven is treated like a literal slave, and on her very first day in their home, Kitty bathes her in almost boiling water to “wash away the germs,” and if I remember correctly, she even puts something like Lysol in her hair (since unlike her siblings who have straight red hair because they don’t share the same mother, Heaven’s hair is black and wavy).
Here’s where it gets even darker: Kitty and Cal’s marriage falls apart, and Cal starts developing not just paternal but also romantic feelings toward Heaven, eventually insisting and managing to sleep with her??? ( •̯́ ^ •̯̀) Heaven finally grows tired of everything and decides to seek out her mother’s family, eventually moving in with her maternal grandparents to escape the nightmare she endured with those two lunatics. In theory, that’s where the first book ends—with her running into the arms of her maternal family.
Dude what a horror. This author clearly loves to make children suffer in a deeply disturbing way. This was supposed to be just a “meantime” read for me, something to hold me over, and I didn’t expect to get so hooked but when I finished it and didn’t have the sequel ready, I almost crash out. This woman truly knows how to write twisted, depressing stories. 8/10.
