the way schools teach history..

as someone who LOVEESS history, i think history classes (at least the ones in US public schools) are too focused on “what happened” rather than the social pov of: “why did it happen, and who did it happen to?”.

i think that history classes should not only teach how to analyze proper sources, but also how to understand the perspectives of the people at the time in order to show the similarities between now and then.

for example: if we look at a war from the 1700s, most people (especially teenagers) arent going to care about the events if they dont care about the people its happening to. this also extends to the modern day, if people dont know someone impacted by an event they tend not to care what’s happening or who it harms.

i think a way to fix that apathy is to also go into the society of the time before going into the events!! analyze the way people were living, their daily lives, how these events might impact it. this will make people care much more about these events, and events today, because they will feel more connected to the people who experienced it! on top of that, understanding that people in history are similar to people nowadays makes it so that they understand that these events *can* repeat, and that if you dont know why they happened in the first place, there wont be warning signs.

ps: sorry if some of my wording doesnt make sense i’m exhausted

who? what? where? when? why? how? are all such important questions to answer when looking back and learning about history.

I think history lessons will work only if we as society will admit that we made and are making mistakes. We should turn history not in a science of what happened but in a science of what we should or should not do as our and future generations to reach a better future. History events are material for a work on mistakes. examples to think over, but if we treat them like sacred pieces, we will make history a dead science instead of having it as a teacher of life:/

i agree!!! i think if people continue to ignore past mistakes that humanity has done in the past it will only make things worse
