Before reading, I'd like to mention that Fear & Hunger is a horror fantasy RPG, and is targeted towards an adult/18+ audience for the material within the game.
None of the material will be mentioned in detail, as it'll just be talking about my thoughts and brief experiences.
Soo.. Fear & Hunger! I've been wanting to play this game for ages, but knowing about it's brutal unfairness intimidated me; until I finally mustered up enough courage to open the game. And roughly 2 minutes within starting, I died to The Hounds- I had no idea that they'd follow me into the dungeon once they spawned.
Second run, learned not to stay outside for too long, as the wolves spawning were on a timer at the start- and got a momentum going! I was really REALLY lucky in defeating the first few enemies I had come across, but had accidentally stepped on a nail on the map, and died to my infection before entering the first courtyard.
Despite dying so often, I learned something new from each run in my save file. I thought that the relentlessness of this game would make me dislike it, but I was drawn to keep on playing.
Fear & Hunger is a game that does not hold it's punches when it comes to dark horror, and honestly? I think it's what makes it stand out. It's art style is unique, and drained of color, alongside its painterly shading- the music, despite being crafted from what I can assume are free samples and mixing, makes it all the more terrifying and immersive. This game is awful in it's morality at times, and it's horror is extreme, but it's setting is done so well, that it just leaves you morbidly curious for what else there is. I love learning the worldbuilding + the gods, and the time setting being in the medieval period. (mid-late 1600s, I believe.)
There's so many ridiculous yet terrible ways to die, that you just have to sit there and laugh it off sometimes.
Like the wizard head I had randomly encountered, and by just hearing the new attack music blaring in my ears- I could tell I was already dead. He was having a monologue, laughing giddily- and despite my impending doom, I couldn't help but laugh each time the music went BBBWWWOOOOOOMMMMMM after a moment of silence. apparently you can recruit him to your party somehow????? among some other enemies, but I've no idea how to even approach that.
I have a lot of fun in learning how to progress, tactics to fight enemies, and knowing which ones to avoid- but there's also times you miss an attack on your first fight, and wind up dead immediately. Having to do a 50/50 coinflip on saving your game at specific spots if you don't find a certain one-time use scroll is crazy too, lol.
Overall, game is awesome! If you're an adult, can handle mature themes, gore, body horror, nudity, etc.., I really recommend looking into it if you enjoy horror games.
Some art of D'arce and The Girl ^_^
I was trying so hard to free her, and couldn't find a key to do so for multiple runs- and once I finally found one and added her to my party, i lost her very quickly. :[
