Probably my most controversial post I have made yet. Tread lightly you know.
I wasn't sure what category to use as this is just for DNIs in general, but I'll be using Spacehey for the category.
I'm personally not a fan of DNIs, because of how I think they're a waste of time*1 and just create tons of clutter in the blogs section. Something something curate your experience something use the block button something something don't feed the trolls. You could consider this a DNI slander blog.
Personally, I have a second issue with DNIs. The "hoiler-than-thou" mentality that comes along with it. I won't mean this to turn into any sort of discourse.*2 It's just how I see some DNIs written.
I usually see DNI blogs that have little notes aside them that are judgmental in nature such as "DNI if you're racist (you're a gross triple K facist freak!!!)" for an example, and I'm not defending racist people that's just an example I provided. Real racist people wouldn't even be here in the first place, and if they did they wouldn't announce it in their profile, I'll get into this later.*3
Most DNIs seem to be some form of non religious purity check - it can all be summed up as "look at my beliefs! I DNI'd all of the bad guys! I'm so morally correct aren't I." because pretty much all DNIs in one big nutshell usually have what the original poster describes as 'bad people' and 'people who support bad thing/creator', sometimes even 'people who romanticize/normalize/glamorize bad thing' if you were feeling adventurous at that.
I don't mean to generalize but people who have DNIs don't really feel like they want those people to not interact with them, but it's more-so "look at how good I am, I do no wrong at all, if you display any form of evil you may leave out of that door my dear" because DNIs have stuff like 'homophobes, racists, pedos, nazis' and such. It makes me think DNI has lost a little meaning overtime.
This is a more smaller issue I have that I'll at the last minute cram into this post. These terms: Basic dni, Weirdos, Creeps, Weird people, etc. and "[certain media] fans DNI"
I personally have something against "Weirdos DNI", "Creeps DNI", "Weird people DNI" because those words are very subjective. Only people with low self esteem consider themselves a "creep" or else a "weirdo" and something else about radiohead. People won't magically know when they are a 'bad person' it's only if others tell them about it, even then that's also extremely subjective too. 'Weirdos' could mean something like people who message you "send bob and vagene" all the way to autistic people that have "I'm such a weirdo >u< I loved fnaf and undertale ever since middle school!!!" in their bio.
Being specific is key, instead of just "Weirdo" say what your supposed definition of weirdo is! god damn!
Basic DNI is slightly less bad than the rest but then again, it's still very subjective and only what's called "terminally online people" would be able to get what that means. The average person is sometimes just too lazy to Google your magical carrd terms*4 unfortunately; but even then the "basic dni" definitions that are found online have differing criterias, so even "basic dni" is still pretty ambiguous like the other ones!
As for the "fans of [certain media] DNI" that's quite possibly the most trivial thing to put in a DNI. I don't mean to be aggressive but if you see someone who likes a certain thing you don't like that's interacting with you, suck it up, you'll live. It's a different story if you had a bad past experience that just happened to be associated with a piece of media, if so scroll all the way to the very last paragraph of this post before the footnotes.
On the other side of the coin is people saying "[certain media] fans DNI" because of the fandom it has: fandoms are notoriously toxic, and people can like something without interacting with the fandom. For example I personally enjoy MLP:FIM but I don't participate in the fandom. (I'm open to being made fun of for being a pegasister "in the big '25")
And "[certain media] has a bad creator!" have you heard of "seperate art from artist"? you can like 'bad' media without having to support the 'bad' creator.
Oh yeah, remember that "racist people won't announce that they're racist in their profile" dear reader? I'm about to get into that now:
To give you, dear reader, one fat reality check: There are probably people that will purposefully hide their identity just to be friends with you. Nobody's going to parade the fact they're homophobic in their bio or show little blinkie badges to say they advocate for skinning babies alive.
Infact, only talking about your best qualities and hiding your bad traits is a common thing especially when making friends - the first meetup (or messages if it's online) isn't a church confessional booth. Infact you the dear reader may be doing this too! when's the last time you announced that you were a wanted criminal and if you were caught you'd be put on death row in your profile for everyone to see?
'Tis the art of lying. If you really want to be absolutely sure you're not Spacehey friends with a secret puppy kicker, the next best thing is interrogating the hell out of your newly accepted friend. Which might make others think you're a paranoid schizo, excuse my rude language (I'm sure that all you people that fit in that 2 worded description are great people).
Alternate accounts exist for a reason, for people to keep their main account pure and allow themselves to put all of the bad stuff about them in their super secret alt account. You might have one, and I might have one; but neither of us will know because I don't put "SUPER ULTRA MEGA SECRET ACCOUNT RIGHT >>> HERE <<< DNI STILL APPLIES" in my profile.
The internet is your unique experience; curate it. Block users, block tags. Perhaps instead of having DNI lists have "FYI" lists where you give a heads up to anybody that interacts with you, or have no list at all. Blocking takes about 5 seconds max on any social media, if you can spend 15 hours doomscrolling, you can defintely shave off a good 5 seconds from your doomscrolling sessions to block something.

meh yeah but people have the right to put whatever rules down they want. that doesn't mean people should be required to follow it (in most cases). lots if people have "proship dni" but I still wanna see their content, yknow? I'm not going to talk to them about proship discourse or force them to look at my dark content. I just wanna see your stuff, man. I don't wanna be blocked cuz I have proship emojis in my bio
SQUIDYTHEONE
DNI people with DNIs heheh

Because it literally is a holier than thou thing, IVE had people interact and FOLLOW ME with RPF DNI/DSMP fans DNI. They only put it to fit in with others before showing their true form cus tumblr allows you to hide who you follow

I agree! But would it be okay if I had DNI adults? Like not in a rude way but I genuinely feel uncomfortable if an adult tries to strike up a conversation with me. But im probably just being paranoid tho lol

I only have "DNI Oll*e" I my bios because of an inside joke with my friends. I have massive beef with those long ass DNI lists. I'M NOT READING ALL OF THAT...

This is so true

People will have dni for the most obvious shit
Like yea, I'm pretty sure most people don't want to interact with a racist, but I don't think adding that to your bio will do anything
Merrick Square
good blog and good layout

Agreed, it makes sense if it's like "minors dni" but you can keep that in your about me without having to create a huge list. People tend to forget about the block button a lot and just waste time on poorly made ragebait and write a paragraph crying about it instead.

so real dni lists are such a nothing burger when the option is available to block the ppl u dont want on ur page. its a bit of work but that's typically how it works in life dawg
and besides, on spacehey u can decline those requests lmao its like a private insta acct

I don't disagree with you, though, like you said in your first footnote, they can be useful in some instances.
I do find it ridiculous how necessary its become to have a DNI, because, in my experience, some people see the lack of a DNI and assume you will agree with or accept their fucked up beliefs.
I get "curate your own experience" but after the 20th person who calls themself a "MAP" follows you...it just gets really tiring to have to prune your followers constantly. So you put up the DNI to hopefully deflect them.
It's like a bug zapper.

how about the genre of dni lists that are longer than the bible. like they’re always some extreme woke lefty…like god forbid i eat vegetables or sum.
kiko!
Can’t believe I fell for the Rick roll. Have I lost all internet street smarts? :(

i kinda half agree but not fully...
for reference, my dni is just a little dropdown on my page. you could scroll right past it if you weren’t looking hard! the list itself is pretty specific, mostly pulled from past experiences i’ve had. i’ve got the obvious stuff on there, but also some things people weirdly put front and center on their own profiles (like lolicons, “friend collectors,” etc).
the point of a dni (to me) is just curating your space so you’re comfortable. it’s not supposed to mean “i’m better than you” or “i hate you.” it literally just means “do not interact.” some people use it like a hate list anyway, but that’s not how i see it.
either way, it doesn’t really affect me if someone has one. if i’m not on their list, then why would i care? :)

Personally I use DNIs as more of a warning. Like for example, “real gore watchers DNI”, for me that’s less of a “don’t interact with me :(((“ and more of a “if you interact with me and I find out you watch real gore, you will get blocked. This is not a safe space for you.”

Something something purity culture something something christian upbringing. Young people nowadays are so afraid of being labeled a “bad” person or being associated with “bad” people. And what is being labeled as a “bad” is so petty sometimes (see: “DNI [certain media] fans” and shipping discourse). I am afraid that this will be going to a point where they genuinely believe thought crimes exist.
Something something words like 'glorify' 'normalize' 'romanticize' 'glamorize' being used way too much by young people something something which just to happens to be some of my least favorite words of all time.

Personally I’m so sick of the word “problematic” that every time I hear it I just tune out instantly.
by wonder2; ; Report
omg how could I forget 'problematic'.
Whenever I see a "exposing [John doe]/[John doe] exposed" post and start to read it, once I hear any of my previously mentioned words and 'problematic' it instantly makes my mind go numb because I've heard it so much I can't take it seriously anymore.
Which makes this a big problem because when people are upset at others to the point they want to ruin their life, they really love to use buzz words, or heavily charged words (e.g. Pedophile) because it's the easiest way to cancel someone.
It's going to get to a point the original meaning goes lost. There's going to be a point where people suddenly stop taking serious crimes seriously due to the heavy usage. There's going to be a time that 'pedophile' will suddenly mean you like short people, or somebody under the age of 25.
I say to leave the big and bad words like that to the people that actually know how to use them. When I think of it this is like the boy who cried wolf story.

“Which makes this a big problem because when people are upset at others to the point they want to ruin their life, they really love to use buzz words, or heavily charged words (e.g. Pedophile) because it's the easiest way to cancel someone.” Exactly. And this coupled with people’s need to prove that they don’t support “bad” people leads to the person who is accused being harassed even if the proof against them is lackluster at best. It’s so sad to see these people think that they are “on the good side” for sending death threats to “bad” people.
The usage and meaning of the word “pedophile” in internet circles is interesting to me because back in the 00s words like pedo, rapist and molest were used in a joking manner. I don’t know if this was just an anime fandom thing but I’ve seen several jokes about those things made under fanart or fanvideos. For example (https://www.deviantart.com/kitten-chan/art/Sketch-12-For-Bakuras-Lil-53782071) “LOL tsk tsk Satoshi, I know you said you wanted to get Dark but....molesting Daisuke's not the best way to go about it XDDDD” or under this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUZSYwv2ix4) a person being credited as voicing “Ikuto Rapist Man”. It’s good that over time jokes like that stopped but it seems that the pendulum has swung to the other side where people are now being accused of being pedophiles left and right in a serious manner.

I don’t take most DNIs srsly(in the sense where I’ll tend to just not interact/follow if it’s long/weird enough)but I ESPECIALLY won’t if u have sum shit like
“DNI pedos,” then right under it’s “DNI ppl fans of MLP”
It leaves such a disgusting taste in my mouth. Kinda feels like the OP sees them as similar in terms of bad which is…something

Did i just get rickrolled
