the story of my short-lived true crime blog

in 2022 i used to run the tumblr side-blog "morbid-menagerie-of-maniacs" which was essentially my depository of any true crime related story that i found interesting. a lot of them were about local stories that i wanted more people to know about. the blog never got big, but i did have a 1k note post about Travis Alexander.

now i know the "tcc" on tumblr is completely overrun by mass shooter sympathizers and serial killer fanfic writers so i want to make it known that i absolutely did not do any of that weird shit. i (briefly) went to college for criminology, and i wanted to be a journalist (and honestly i still do enjoy writing think pieces and essays), so all of my posts were either mini-summaries of cases that i found or pictures relating to a famous true crime case. i had a disclaimer that said:

"i already have it written in my bio, but just in case you didn't see it....

columbiners, ted nation, the manson family, and anyone else who glorifies/romanticizes/supports violent criminals are NOT welcome on this blog."

i would unironically spend at least an hour every day blocking columbiners and other mass killer sympathizers who would reblog my stuff. but it genuinely did nothing. even my regular informative true crime posts would be reblogged from people like "er1c-f0rever" or "naturalselection," and doubly if the post was about a mass shooter. eventually i just got tired of having to deal with it, so i deleted my blog.

now, the blog is pretty cringe. i genuinely thought i was this, like, PI who was making the world a better place when. really. i was just fueling a really problematic section of the internet full of annoying pre-teens. i still enjoy learning about disturbing things, but nowadays my taste is more in like. internet mysteries. i think a lot of the "tcc" tumblr community, and true crime in general, has a lot of issues. and i've moved on from more tasteless creators like Bailey Sarian and to more respectful creators like Nexpo.
