your child's online saftey is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

real talk- if you are a parent and you are concerned about your kid's safety online, you need to monitor their activity. it isnt anyone elses job to keep your kids safe on here- this is the internet, not a daycare. i totally get wanting to come across as the "cool parent" by letting your kids do whatever they want online, but you cant be a cool parent without actually parenting? parents these days have gotten so relaxed with letting their kids do whatever online that actual fucking websites have had to up security to "protect children," while also putting the older teens/adults who are supposed to be on those sites in danger. i shouldn't have to show ID to use spotify just because your kid is listening to explicit music. i shouldnt have to show ID on youtube to clarify that i'm old enough to watch mature content, because your twelve year-old set his age on there as 25 so he could watch uncensored gore videos. entire governments shouldn't have to ban social media platforms in their countries because you never explained what online safety is to your kids.  additionally, stop complaing when you let your kids onto any given platform or space with adults and the adults there dont cater to your children. that is not our job. you cant bring a lemon juicer to an apple oarchard and expect there to be lemons.

and to any kids reading this, no, im not saying your parents should constantly follow whatever youre up to online, but occasional check-ins to make sure youre doing safe things are good. if me wanting your parents to keep you safe online really bothers you that much, maybe you arent mature enough to be online in the first place.

SERIOUSLY! I got my first phone that had internet and cell service at 10, I should NOT have had that. My parents trusted me, and I didn't really get into anything I shouldn't have, but many kids don't understand that. The internet has been around for decades now, and I get that it's always changing, but that doesn't mean parents can just let their kids roam the internet freely. Any sane person wouldn't let their kid roam around a physical place without supervision, what's different with the internet?

LITERALLYYYY. Honestly ive always thought that kids shouldn't have access to the internet in general, and i see these parents giving their 10 year olds phones and im like?? why? like can't your kids just watch spongebob or something instead of youtube shorts i mean come on. such an easy solution and they just dont care.

Agreed, but I don't think most of this legislation is actually about protecting kids or due to parents complaining that the internet isn't made for kids. It's about controlling peoples data and anonymity. Why would Wikipedia require ID in the UK? Because the government doesn't like that people can share information anonymously using the web. It was never about the children.

^^ this as well!! they use the idea of protecting kids as a cover for it, because they know a lot of people care about doing so but not enough to put the actual work in.
