i work for a company called american cruise lines as a housekeeper, ive been here for four weeks counting this one.
as the title says, its not too great out here on the mississippi river. the pay isnt horrible per say, with 30/60/90 day raises from a ten dollar beginning. you get paid weekly with an average of 80 hrs with 30-45 hours of overtime every week. though, the only raise that really matters is the 60 day raise. at 90 days, you can earn 14-15 an hour. cool, fine, dandy even.
However.
these cruises can go upward of 14,000. typically our cheapest rooms are still 5,000. so, as you can expect, the company wants these rooms to look like they havent been lived in at all every day.
you have from 7:30am to about 1:30pm (depending on if the rooms are on do not disturb, requested for a l8r time, could take even longer) to complete all of these rooms, which is typically about twelve or so. ive worked through many lunches (lunch is at 11:15am) to get the number of rooms down to an acceptable level, and cutting corners is just another part of ship life.
you're assigned a "public space" to take care of each day, multiple times a day. mine currently is the cafe and i would like to throw myself overboard. but i digress.
if your public space takes longer than 15 minutes to do (they all do), then you will have very little time to do bed bags. mine takes 20-25 minutes and 30 if im really slow.
i gave you all this information to say: i have like ten bed bags and theyre due tomorrow lol im cooked im so fired. if you work for acl do not get on the goddamn mississipi. dont do it.

You're definitely not the only one having issues, or if the other HKs aren't then they're just more efficient with cutting corners. You probably won't get fired.
But either way PLEASE DEMAND A RAISE??? This is the perspective of someone from a front desk who semi-manages the housekeepers, and it is significately smaller than a whole cruise. But our HKs are contract workers, so the numbers are not precise, but they get paid ~50/hr, each clean takes about 2 hours. Our units run for about $300/ni. They have about 10 cleans a week, give or take based on the season.
You are being overworked and underpaid. Never hold that against yourself!!! You are the reason people can safely be on this cruise!! If shit was dirty then no one would be on tge cruise, or would be demanding refunds. Use that to your advantage!!! You have the power!
i did get fired, but for "rejecting coaching opportunities" and he fired me p much after i was supposed to get my first raise...
its comforting to know that someone else thinks i shouldve been paid more...and someone else in the cruise industry to boot!! if anything, i'd actually like to work for another cruiseline, since i did live on the boat and i liked the travel!!
currently im out of a job and if i could work for the company you work for, that would be fantastic, actually. i dont want to ask for too much, or to make you uncomfortable, but i'd love to work for another cruise. especially for the one that you described, that sounds amazing compared to mine!!
we even had a man die on board and it was partially due to my manager's negligence (man was choking and he didn't take the correct steps). i would like to not go through that again
