I originally wanted to start this September 1st, but I can't take it anymore. It's gotten to the point where I go on to tiktok out of habit, not even because I am enjoying the content I am seeing. I would say 50% of the time the content I do see either upsets me or makes me annoyed. It's time I should put a stop to it.
This was my screen time on the app last week:

No your eyes do not deceive you, that is in fact 21 HOURS and 58 MINUTES I spent on the app alone last week! That is absolutely insane. I basically wasted a whole day on that app in 1 week.
In the past I stayed off tiktok for about 4-6 months or so when the season finale of Attack on Titan was coming out and I wanted to avoid spoilers. This is because the last season came out in like 4 different parts, and instead of watching them as they came out, I decided to wait till they were all out so I could watch it all together. So I am sure I can do this again for a month at the very least.
So this is my plan...
1. Disable the app
-I am able to disable the tiktok app on my phone so that I am not able to see it but it is still technically installed on my phone, just invisible. This way if I do want to get back on tiktok after a month, I wont have to download and sign in again.
2. Keep a log
- I am sure I will go on my phone looking for tiktok out of habit and realize I can't find it on my phone. I want to try and keep a log of what I do right after. Basically seeing what I choose to spend my time on after realizing I can't go on tiktok.
3. Other apps
-As we know, lots of other apps now post similar videos to tiktok, such as Instagram reels and Pinterest highlights. For now I will try my best to avoid the reels section on Instagram. Luckily I think my Pinterest algorithm has realized I prefer pictures of videos, so I don't get many videos on my feed as much as when they first were introduced to the app.
4. Make an update post
On September 26th I will make a new blog post recapping the month and how I did without tik tok and if anything else changed in my life from not using the app.
I honestly would like to delete Instagram as well but there are a few issues on that. My friends and family message me on the app so I would basically have to tell everyone I am deleting the app so they don't thing I am ignoring them haha. Also I do like using Instagram for looking at food places or clothing shops. I would honestly have no problem with Instagram if it weren't for the ads. When I am looking on my home feed, I only want to see people I follow, but instead the app keeps recommending and showing other accounts of celebrities and I wish it would just stop. What's the point of having a home page if its not going to show me only what I follow? Like when did my home page become the explore page? Anyways it is a little too difficult to get rid of that app as of right now but who knows, maybe one day I will.
So anyways, I officially disabled the tiktok app on my phone. If anyone has any tips or wants to talk about their experiences using or not using the app, I would love to hear.
Powering down,
