Storytime | Nation-wide Power Outage

Back on the 28th of April, the Iberian peninsula had a full power outage from 11:00am to ~11:30pm.

Yes, before you write it, I know I'm a little bit late to the party ^_^

but I want to make an archive to share this full story with more people, and since the story itself is pretty funny in retrospect, it should be a good read.

I am Portuguese and I felt this when I was at art school having class. There was a environmental protest at around the same time, starting at school, so I generally assumed it was a gesture from the protesters. Then lunch break came around...

One of my friends' father is an electrician, and he works for a very big company in here. Before we lost all of our signal, he was able to send her a text message, and that was pretty much the way we got the news. we OF COURSE started to freak out, I mean, since every single public transport that relied on electricity, for example: metro lines and trains, and we come from various places, nowhere near the school, and used those things as our daily commute. Luckily, my parents were already on their way to pick me up.

The traffic was insane. Everyone was trying to get home, the bus services were being re-enforced, and, worst of all, the stop lights didn't work. So, it was a major hassle getting home, what now?

Some friends of mine did end up going to the protest, which was meant to be a big walk until they reached the assembly's front door, do some stuff I don't remember, and only then was the protest finished and they could go home. Problem was... my friend, she didn't have any means to go home. Metro? unable to work because of the outage. Bus? didn't have any helpful services. So she had to walk approximately more than 10 kilometres! I remember getting signal back and reading her desperate messages complaining about how walking that much non-stop felt like her feet were broken... (´。_。`) And one of my classmates had to stay temporarily at her grandmother's house because her house's water was down... yeah...

Well... the only way we got news about the black-out was through the radio on my dad's car, but the rest of the time spent was really boring. While I could draw while the sun was still up, once it set I was running out of activities to do. We ended up heating some soup up with our gas stove and I took some pictures of stuff around the house.

After that, it was just an increasingly long wait of the lights to back on... UNTIL!

Around 11:30pm... we heard uproar from the street. We assumed: the lights were back. we turned one on, and... YES! The power outage was no more!

So... that was it! I hope I didn't make any typos and that the story was interesting enough.

See you! (*^▽^*)
