Interstellar (2014) is a movie directed by Christopher Nolan.
Synopsis
Our planet is quickly becoming more and more uninhabitable, so much that we do not need engineers anymore but people who can harvest food. In this context, a group of explorers uses a gap in space-time to travel off-world in search for a new planet to welcome humanity.
Review
🪐 The movie itself (themes/actors/story)
I like sci-fi movies so there was no way for me not to like Interstellar.
The casting is brilliant. Every actor did a great job and every emotions felt so real as much in their dialogues as in their body language.
I was scared to struggle to understand the movie, as I did when I watched Inception (I had to watch it twice to fully understand it), but it is actually pretty easy to follow. The plot is fairly simple but in a good way. Sometimes people try to make movies with a very complex plot and it just feels too much. In Interstellar, the plot is simple but the movie is splendid.
Many themes are discussed such as love (I will talk about this one more in details later), death, beliefs, humanity, truth, time, sacrifices,... and it makes us reflect upon it which I enjoy very much.
Some people have a hard time with this movie because it talks a lot about astrophysics but I truly appreciate this aspect.
🪐 Colours
The colours of this movie are very atmospheric and really help to create an immersive ambience. I like how the scenes on Earth are more yellow-green and the ones in space have more blue tones wich makes it easier to know where the action takes place. At the very end of the movie, the space station also has green and yellow tones but more saturated which feels less natural as if they wanted to recreate an impression of being on Earth. It is very clean as well, almost sanitized. I like how this attempt to recreate Earth is noticed by Cooper.
🪐 Soundtrack
The amazing soundtrack is by the renowned Hans Zimmer. I
cannot stress enough how important it is in the creation of the
atmosphere and emotions conveyed by the movie. We can easily associate
it to the dimension of time for we can frequently hear a clock ticking
whenever the time takes more importance. At some point Copper says “Seven
years per hour here, let’s make it count!”, and right after
this we hear a clock ticking. This clock is very important and we can
hear it more distinctively and intensively whenever there is a climax or
a rush.
I also love the use of the organ wich makes the whole soundtrack more “human” for we can hear it “breath” and it fit the movie very well.
I definitely recommend you to watch this video if you are willing to learn more about the making of Interstellar's soundtrack and the peculiar process Hans Zimmer went trough to bring this masterpiece to life.
🪐 Love
Love has a major place in Interstellar. It was the founding idea for Christopher Nolan for he at first only told Hans Zimmer this movie was going to be about the relationship between a father and his child.
Love is the key, the thing that goes beyond every dimension and connects everything and everyone. Love is everywhere and cannot be stopped, even by a black hole. I very much enjoy this aspect of the movie and the fact that love is not shown primarily as something romantic but also platonic. Romantic love does not outdo platonic love, both are shown to be equally strong. I really liked the fact that platonic love was the main focus in the movie.

PS : Forgive my extensive use of emotional language. I have found myself to be very enthusiastic when adressing a subject I find interesting.
