Huis clos et Les Muches- my personal thoughts

I’ve recently read these two books by Sartre and I loved them and it made think a lot. Sartre is a controversial writer but I cannot deny his talent and his passion in his books.

In “huis clos” which translates to “closed door” we have 3 people , they are dead and they are in hell and they don’t know it. What’s particular about this is that when the story develops they don’t suffer the typical pain that we can expect in hell instead they suffer something worse: facing the truth. Because in this book “l’enfers c’est les autres “ it means that hell are the others, people judging you for what you did for all your mistakes obliging you to take responsibility.

In “les mouches” which translates to “the mosquitoes” we have an ancient setting were the inspiration is clearly Greek. Fate, sorrow, revenge, and pride take control of the history and the mosquitoes? They once again represent accountability and the constant reminder of what you have done. In this case the son of the dead king Oreste takes all the pain and sorrow of his people to free them but at the same time to punish himself.

Ofc these are my personal interpretations, if you would like to discuss about these books or others I would love to!

Are these books written English, genuine question? Also, yes tsking accountability is hell for some people. A lot of People struggle to face themselves and their actions and how it affects others or even their own lives. Hardest truth is the honesty given to thy self.
