Prince Daddy & The Hyena - A Love Letter to Emo's Cosmic Thrill Seekers

i feel like no matter how many bands you listen to or how many genres you like.. everyone has their BAND. their favorite out of the bunch. one they OBSESS over. that band for me is Prince Daddy & the Hyena, a four-piece rock band from Albany, NY that likes green day, weezer, tmnt, and making really freaking good music. like. REALLY GOOD. this is an appreciation blog for them, written on my sister's bedroom at 10 PM because im super energetic from a monster i drank earlier.

WHO ARE PRINCE DADDY & THE HYENA?

Prince Daddy has gone through a bunch of members since their formation in 2014, originally started by-

Korneilious "Kory" Jophus Gregory – lead vocals, guitar (2014–present)

Cameron "Cambo" Hanford – guitar (2014–present)

Zakariya "Hardly Knew Yee" Houacine – bass (2014–2019)

Alex "Al Al Bean" Ziembiec – drums (2014–2017; died 2022 :( )

and in replacement of bass and drums...

Daniel "Podwick" Gorham – drums, backing vocals (2018–present)

Jordan "J Nasty" Chmielowski - bass (2020-present)

((that took way longer to type out than it shouldve))

To put it simply, this band has been through a lot. Car accident, getting robbed, Kory having an acid trip, probably a lot of depression xd but they show it all through their honest, raw and powerful music. Each album sounds different, they aren't afraid to switch up their sound. They can make anything from a weed-pizza-power-pop album to a concept rock opera album, in fact, THEY DID! so that might make you ask-

WHERE DO I START WITH PRINCE DADDY???

im glad you asked...!!! XD

okay, three albums, where should you start?????? I'll tell YOU! you can start ANYWHERE with this band. it's more about what you're looking for. let's start with their first album, I Thought You Didn't Even Like Leaving.

I Thought You Didn't Even Like Leaving (2016)

(emo, post hardcore, power-pop, pop punk, slacker rock?)

An 11 track album of songs Kory wrote near the end of highschool. I Thought You Didn't Even Like Leaving is personally my favorite P Daddy album. It's loud, layered, fuzzy, noisy, aggressive yet emotional and REALLY groovy. The band's most popular songs are on this album, the most recognizable being I Forgot To Take My Meds Today. It's flawed, but that's what makes it awesome. The band wears their Green Day and Weezer influence on their sleeves on this album while sounding original. I'm gonna be up front... i love this album. it may just be perfect timing because im starting my junior year and i'm just a really anxious and emotional person, but this album feels like my life. I relate to quite literally every song on this album. It feels made for me. I've gotten close to crying to this record a few times, and it's hard for me to do that. But I won't talk about this on for much longer. If you're looking for something, groovy, fast and slow, loud yet soft, and overall enjoyable, start here.

Cosmic Thrill Seekers (2019)

(Power Pop, rock opera, emo, pop punk)

Their best album. If you don't mind Kory's constantly grating harsh vocals on every track, you'll really enjoy this album. It's a concept album inspired by an acid trip, American Idiot, The Black Parade, and The Wizard of Oz, and way more. "The Albany emo band offer us a f**k-up's masterpiece, a hero's journey following a guy who might conquer the world if he could leave his couch," said a guy that wrote a pitchfork review on the album. This a front to back piece of art that doesn't get enough attention. The way the songs flow like one big movie, the harmonized solos, the interesting chords and riffs, the spacey aesthetic, the way the album is split into three acts, WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR???? this album is amazing. If I had to pick an album to start with this band, THIS IS IT!!! but wait... WE STILL HAVE ONE MORE ALBUM!!!!!

Prince Daddy & The Hyena (2022)

(Post-Hardcore-ish, pop punk, emo, emo-pop... screamo???? i dont know, this album is awesome)

Track 12 made me cry. This is the band's biggest departure from the sound they started with. It's an experimental emotional rollercoaster that's worth the ride. this album has it all- a dark, fast punk rock track that might be screamo-adjacent?? (don't attack me, im not good with genres.), an upbeat pop track, a spooky, anxious and angry track, and Black Mold. Their best song in terms of catching emotions and what might be Kory's most vulnerable and honest song yet. It's not their best album, but it still does things better than the last two that gives it many brownie points.

So that's as far as the band goes with albums for now... but they still have a killer EP, in fact, tons of killer EP's and singles and splits! But that's something for you to check out! I think whoever reads this will find something to enjoy by Prince Daddy & The Heyna. I hope you enjoyed reading my schizo rant about this silly band from New York, have a great day night or evening :3
