album ranking #8: Зброя пролетаріату (Arms to the proletariat) by Жадан і собаки (Zhadan and the dogs)

the concept of "ukrainian punk" is very broad. i think half our music has been political since 2014 and pretty much all of it has been since 2022 (this is a generalization, really i've only been paying attention to the political stuff lol). and although i get tired of looking at more and more headlines about streets i've walked on being decimated, i will always have a love for ukrainian punk. nowadays, what we call "punk" can really be anything from rap to metal. to americans, Жадан і собаки sounds like your average ska band, but to me it's true punk with a distinctly ukranian sound of brass instruments.

   shevchenko plant is a former soviet now ukrainian weapons factory named after a russian poet

   explain

   "liashko" refers to oleh liashko, member to the ukrainian radical soc-dem party
