You and probably most music lovers have questioned if music can turn into an addiction
Experts donβt formally recognize music addiction as a mental health diagnosis. So,technically you canΒ΄t be addicted to music.Still, that doesnβt mean music habits can still sometimes become problematic.
"But how are addictions even developed?"
Great question!Dopamine plays a crucial role on the development of an addiction cycle(Dopamine is known as the "feel-good" hormone)
Certain behaviors(and substances)trigger the release of dopamine. If the substances and behaviors become present in someone's daily life, over time, the brain's reward system starts to rely on those habits and the natural Dopamine production decreases. In theory, the brain could come to rely on music-triggered dopamine, but there's not much evidence to prove this actually happens
Unfortunately, this is a rather complicated topic and theres no straight answer...
Things that professionals check when evaluating someone for a possible addiction:
*Can you control the behavior pattern?
*Does it cause problems in your daily life?
*Do you continue with the behavior, despite the negative consequences, because you feel unable to stop?
*Does the need for the behavior increase over time and you experience withdrawl when you don't engage in such?
(it all comes down to one question:Does listening to music affect you negatively)
Specific signs that you may want to take a closer look at your music habits
*You rely on music to manage your emotions
*You can't function without music
*Music distracts you from important tasks
(music can also play a part in substance use)

I've seen a video of someone saying not having any distraction like scrolling on your phone or listening to music during e.g. riding the bus slows down time and makes you be more in the moment. Since then I've tried to steer away from doing just that. Every time I go out I purposely leave my airpods at home even if I later curse myself for doing that because I'm bored. And honestly it really is refreshing to just hear the room silence. Like rn it's in the middle of the night and I can hear crickets and cars driving through my open window which I doubt I would be able to hear while listening to music.
I think the closest thing to being addicted to music is needing to have music in the background while doing something. With fried attention spans through short form videos some people need constant stimulation to be able to go through their day which can be done by listening to music
As I was doing the research,it was mentioned that every step mattered. Not carrying your AirPods everywhere gives the opportunity of listening to whatβs happening outside. Also, using headphones or earbuds very frequently is bad for your hearing. β¨
