i really don't know what to write exactly, but this thing frustrates me so much that my ovaries are already on the floor and i don't have any friends in real life who want to hear about that lmao
Context: My mom loves "unique" names. then one day got pregnant with my little fetus self, and since she's a big fan of Bob Marley and reggae culture(?), she decided to use a name related to it. So here I am. turns out that when i was born, back in 2007, there was a law in my country (Argentina) that didn't allow certain names, including "names that are ethnic/from another culture, etc. unless youre part of this or have a permit that authorizes to use it". The problem is there, then; My mother could use the name "Xamaica" since it wasn't the name of the country; if she decided to use "Jamaica" would have to ask permission from the appropriate authority. And ofc she would choose the difficult path lol. Actually, at first it wasn't (nor should it have been) difficult, you just needed some papers that my mom got by exchanging letters with the only representative of the Jamaican consulate in the country. So yes, I have the authorization of the Jamaican people (?) but they kept asking for more and more things and it all inevitably came to nothing.
I mean, it's not really a big deal, indeed it's pretty common. i can handle being called by a name that doesn't identify me and being teased about it (yeah in the great 2025 are people who non-ironically bother others for their name) and yes most people respect me when i explain the situation but yk, you can get used to it, but doesn't mean it doesn't piss you. i hate having to explain what my name is and why, the weird looks when people say or see in some document my legal name, and that ALWAYS have to explain things I have no control over. Ask the guy who made the law idk. Sometimes I feel stupid complaining about it, but feels unfair. Why do I have to pay to use the name that has identified me my entire life? Why is an identity defined by the pay-to-win mentality of bureaucrats who don't even respect the law just to get money? Why, even though I had all the necessary papers, did they refuse to give me the right to an identity? And it's always about money, because no one denies the son of a famous person the right to be called ottoman or smt, nor put the same obstacles in their way as an ordinary person (maybe it's my anger because the daughter of a singer is called Jamaica and to top it all off was born the same day, but I'm not telling lies lmao). Isn't it my right to choose my identity? I understand there are limitations, but we're fighting to achieve this while others take a little more from their pockets and do whatever they want. don't even understand why that law existed in the first place, i understand why they ban some names, but idk find it idiotic.
Anyways, In October we have an appointment with the judge, which I think is one of the last instances before getting it, so I'm happy :p
p.s.: I just remembered my mom telling me that the nurse didn't want to write my name down because they argued (I honestly see this as feasible on both sides), while let the couple next to us choose a name they made up (which at that time was not allowed either) like wtf
