Me When I Reject Big Tech

Me When I Reject Big Tech | 8/16/2025

Soooooo... it's been almost a year since I posted on here, and wow. Life has changed drastically for me in certain ways but stagnated in others. For starters my family moved down to Florida, I learned how to make my own website ( https://rhyswesleyking.cc ), switched to Linux, started learning game development, (very recently) made my own Jellyfin media server, and have a seasonal job lined up in New Hampshire for fall. It's pretty hilarious actually because a few months after I had last posted was when I fell down the rabbit hole of web dev, which led to a more general interest in coding, tech, and digital safety/privacy. I learned so much in such a short period of time that it's kind of staggering to think about where I was at a year ago. Honestly, I'm learning pretty slow in comparison to someone who might take a web dev course or go to school for comp sci, but for self taught I feel pretty okay with where I'm at.

Right now I'm at a cafe working on this blog post, but I'm probably going to practice producing or learning Godot after I finish this. I've been meaning to finally start learning game dev for a while and Godot seems like a decent starting point. The language (GDScript) is apparently super similar to Python--which I haven't learned but seems fairly simple in comparison to something like C++ or C#. My goal is to start by making a small 3D test level out of a game concept I've had since high school. The basic narrative premise is something similar to Limbo (2011) but with the visual style of Ico/Shadow of the Colossus and the gameplay of Kingdom Hearts. My plan is to basically make a base out of copying Kingdom Hearts II's gameplay (movement, combat, level design) and iterating with my own flair once I really learn how Godot works.

Anyway, I could go on longer but I actually want to get some work done aside from blogging so I'll leave it here. I might try to integrate this with my website via an RSS feed, just have to learn how to implement that when I get the chance. I might also just transfer these over to my website and call it a day too though. I don't really use this site since it's overrun with teenagers, which isn't a bad thing per se, but most of the other adults that use this website are only here for a quick hit of nostalgia and dip. I sit in a strange demographic of being old enough to remember MySpace but not old enough to have had my own lol. That being said, I'm done. Hopefully will remember to post more!

Signing Out,
- Rhys
