I saw it on my grandma’s bookshelf and the title caught my eye (I ABSOLUTELY adore attics with all my heart). The book literally only had the title, and it started right away, no synopsis or anything and that made me even more curious, so I took it with me.
It tells the story of the Dollanganger siblings: Cathy, Chris, and the twins Carrie and Cory. After their father dies in a car accident, their mother Corrine takes them to live with their grandparents in a mansion called Foxworth Hall. But the children are locked in the attic to hide their existence, since Corrine (the mother) wants to inherit her father’s fortune.
OH MY GOD THIS BOOK IS A NIGHTMARE “EVERYTHING IS SUCH A SHAME” T-T. It all starts so sweet and then just keeps getting worse and worse. The kids are locked away because apparently their father was Corrine’s half-brother, and her father disowned her and even threw her out of the house. He loved her, and when she came back he gave her the inheritance again, BUT he told her that if he ever found out she had children with that man (even after his death) he would take EVERYTHING away. AND THAT’S WHY THIS WOMAN LOCKS UP HER OWN CHILDREN FOR THREE WHOLE YEARS. “What they do to those kids is truly horrific.” The twins were only five years old when they were locked away :< and the grandmother is completely INSANE, she tortures the children in horrible ways and leaves them with huge traumas. “This book is honestly a constant tragedy.”
I picked it up thinking it would be anything but something this chaotic and traumatic T-T Still, seeing how the children fight to survive and eventually manage to escape the attic to live again brings so many mixed emotions, and it ends up being really catchy. 8/10.
