Tread lightly. Read with an open mind. These aren’t attacks just things I personally don’t agree with or like.
1.)
I genuinely hate media that’s just “LOOK THERES GAY PEOPLE !!!! IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED??? GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY.” Like hey guys we can just exist in a movie or show without having to parade around like peacocks. I like subtlety of queer rep. just a ‘oh look they’re gay… back to the movie’ Because that’s how it should be in fiction and reality.
For example elemental. the rep was subtle but it was there!!! Especially in a romance movie about a hetero couple. Gay people exist, we’re not an anomaly. Anyone who turn heads and soy jack at every gay rep piss me off. Like yesss they exist can we go about our merry way???
Oh an trans allegory? Cool!! As long as it’s not corny and actually represents trans people in a progressive way. Win or lose did it really well!!! They said ‘oh yeah Kai is trans…and they have other contributions rather than JUST BEING TRANS!!’ She had other problems! While yes her dad still misgendered her, she also had an overbearing father that pushed her too hard. That’s not an issue with her being trans, it’s a general issue anyone can face.
okay what I’m trying to say is that media is trying to go ‘oh look a lgbtq person, look here’s gay rep isn’t that what you wanted?!?’ And then their whole thing is just oh we’re gay. And that’s it. It’s full of stereotypes and corny crap. Like don’t you have other qualities????? Besides being lg tvs???
2.)
Also, not everything is a gay allegory… AND THATS OKAY!! Just because you can’t relate to it doesn’t mean you have to bend their trauma into a queer issue. There are GREAT progressive characters and shows you can support and relate to nowadays. Projecting that onto characters (mostly children actually) does not give the rep you’re hoping for I’m sorry. It just doesn’t.
3.)
Another thing is when ppl, especially privileged yt ppl, take Lgbtq problems and run with it. Especially now, after people have died for your rights, you still trying to be as oppressed as they were in the past? Get outta here. yeah people still hate us, but you get to be gay and live.
taking everything offensively and starting problems when there are none is idiotic. Stop victimizing yourselves at every turn. Focus on ACTUAL problems like protecting the work queer people in the past fought for. Like protecting gay marriage and dei in the workplace.
And fyi just because you’re gay does not mean you can relate to other minority issues that you’re not apart of.
4.)
And the worst one is the community infighting. How chronically online do you have to be “It’s lgb not T” “I’m a lesbian but I wouldn’t date a bi girl” peeeyeeww something smells. Go take a shower.
It literally doesn’t exist if you just go outside. Like go to a queer space and say that to someone’s face. They’re gonna look at you like an idiot. Half these problems don’t even come up in real life, it’s such a non issue. one that’s amplified by the internet and it does exactly what the oppressors want which is to divide the community.
5.)
When people say things like “I hate when your sexuality is your personality”, i can’t help but agree. Like yeah, being gay is your identity, but if talking about being gay all the time is what you can bring to the table (saying slurs, calling other people gay, hitting on people all the time) you’re a boring person to me.
Because on the same coin, I find girls who talk about liking boys, their situationship, and their crushes all the time annoying. I find guys who talk about women, tits vs ass, or body count all the time annoying. Just because you’re queer doesn’t exclude you. Making sexuality your personality is annoying PERIOD. Whether you’re hetero or not.
I get a little scared of saying things like this because the community cannot take criticism. Things can be too much. We aren’t saints just because we’re gay. Gay people can be killers, pedos, pervs, racists, ect. Like we have to stop acting like we’re above everyone and that everything is an attack. Because maybe you did a bad thing? Maybe you might even be a bad person. That’s not because you’re queer.
Okay that’s all thank you for listening to my rant

i also felt this way when i was a freshman in high school like 10 years ago. important subtext here is that i no longer feel this way, and i also hope that you grow out of this line of thinking.
Why is this way of thinking bad?

there are loud people and quiet people amongst the community and sometimes that expression in media is also gonna be louder than others. good to have all kinds including the "in your face" kind because that's also what hetero media is like
It’s great when it’s a show centered around gay people. Like that’s fine, nobody needs to watch it if they don’t want to that’s literally the basis of the show. But when there’s a shower perhaps about like superheroes and then there’s a side characters who’s gay and that’s their entire personality and it never changes, that pisses me off. That’s not representation that’s literally just stereotypes and ignorance. It’s not progressive at all and people seem to act like it is.
It’s basically a punch to the face because they just throw a gay person in a show and go “oh look they’re gay there’s your rep the token gay character.” It’s annoying

oh yeah definitely if you feel like there's a lack of effort in the character, but also it's like a slippery slope because a lotta straight people will say that about literally any gay character too

I don't care if any of you agree or disagree with these points, I just hope we can agree that race/skin colour has absolutely NOTHING to do with this situation whatsoever and bringing up "yt people" was undoubtedly the most unnecessary thing mentioned
I was referring to Caucasian queer people who insert themselves in issues that aren’t related to them just because they’re queer. Those people who believe just because they’re oppressed in one area means they can speak about things they cannot relate to

I think the "yt" was necessary. Not everything is about race, but it tends to be when throwing oppression Olympic pity parties. As a black person, I've had the most issues with white queer forgetting that being queer doesn't excuse/allow bigotry and prejudice.

number four is super true but the rest of these just feel like internalized homophobia. go touch grass im begging you
Pretty sure these are the most down to earth takes I can have actually lol so I don’t understand the “go touch grass” or how I’m internally homophobic?

-the thing about praising this super subtle queer rep is strange because the reason pixar and other studios do this very subtle queer rep is to make sure conservatives stick around.
-queer people are allowed to relate to non queer characters and have headcanons
-queer people are still opressed and its only getting worse with the rise of conservatism all over the world
-theres a few conservatives in these comments and posts like these will only attract weirdos like them and personally i dont enjoy seeing them spouting their opinions in another queer persons comments
i understand where you're coming from with these, but they're just not productive thoughts when it comes to queer liberation, posts like this will just lead to more infighting which is what both of us don't want.

The point of my blog was to explain that queer people are not saints nor are we aliens. We are humans. We are humans with thoughts, feeling, and livelihoods just like everyone else. We also have faults. The entire point of representation is to REPRESENT. It would be unrealistic to project the notion that gay people are like zoo animals and that we have to acknowledge queerness every time it’s present. Because the point is to show people that we exist inside the same world as them. That we are like them, we aren’t any different, and we should be treated as such because it’s natural.
1) Expecting conservatives to respect, support, and accept you by doing the very thing that makes Conservatives upset anyway wouldn’t be progressive at all. not saying their way of thinking is good, it’s just how are you supposed to fight for oppression while actively reinforcing the reason people believe we should be oppressed? Like excessive gay media with the intention of ‘raising awareness’ does the exact opposite of what it should, unfortunately. Should we just continue doing it when it could potentially harm the community even more? Like obviously the reason behind it is sad but it’s not like it’s a bad thing to do. It’s even more progressive in that sense.
2) when queer people (especially non poc) strip certain media of its central meaning taking the focus off of real problems within media simply to place it into gay narrative so they can relate to it better it becomes a problem. I’m not talking abt simply headcannoning a character as gay but to strip said character or media of its nuance to assign a role so you can better relate causes actual problems outside of the community and within others
3) I was referring to Caucasian queer people who insert themselves in issues that aren’t related to them just because they’re queer. Those people who believe just because they’re oppressed in one area means they can speak about things they cannot relate to

The gender identity victimhood status is annoying, but I know what it is and why it’s so appealing, but no one is justified in doing it. A simple analogy goes: A parent knows why the child would want the cookie jar, but still puts it out of reach. This is the classic case of playing weak to get some moral high ground, but that action is both anti-moral and among the weakest of choices. I’m aware that lots of queer people are with you on this, so I try not to project the loud onto the whole as I don’t like nor hate the community.
My beliefs are that there are a smaller portion of people who truly don’t fit in the gender binary and natural sexuality, but that I have seen a surge of members merely seeking existential escapism, weakness turned righteousness, or a route to social validation; all facilitated by recent radicalizing publications. This used to be Nietzsche’s critique of Christianity, but today the new god is “inclusitivioty”, and probably a new cultural god tomorrow.
I’m not sure if you’re agreeing with me or not but I do believe some people are in the community for all the wrong reasons. Like especially in 2020-2022 a lot of people now are saying “oh it was just a phase”. And like while I’m happy they got to figure out their identity.it’s a stab on the community of people who are queer. It shows to homophones that we’re confused, in denial, or mentally ill.
I will admit, the scene at that time made me think I was a trans man while I was in middle school. But I was purely insecure of my body. I hated my breasts when they had came in. My body dysmorphia was so bad I thought I was a skinny white guy with straight hair…. As a curvy black girl. I also bounced from label to label whenever I felt a crush.
Now I’m just a person. I’m ‘happy’ with my sex and whoever I like, I like. Labels tie me down and make me have to live up to expectations. I’m just kiko yk?

Honestly, personal puberty recounts came out from left field, but I am really just tossing my double-sided take on the community. I am not agreeing with you nor disagreeing because I don’t know who you are and how you got to your opinions. I don’t advocate for “be proud of your body no matter what”, but you’re stuck with it so at least make it better (physical expenditure, healthy eating, etc).
