music blog ♪ #19

heyyy it's been a while. I haven't been feeling super great or super inspired to write about music but when I do I make sure to jot down a few sentences in the notes app. it's nearly therapeutic to write a little music blog, you should try it! stuff I've been kind of excited about in recent months (salute emoji) but i missed this. and most of all I missed US <3 don't forget to click notable links in title. luhh ya x3

pagans - buried alive (1977-79) [comp]
genre: classic punk, garage punk
FFO: wipers, crime
rating: 8/10

this is an early recording from the year punk broke on treehouse records. the band developed a sort of garage rock sound harkening to bands like crime or even earlier, the sonics. (I keep mentioning the sonics in my blogs because they are a pillar in the way of modern music and its development, check them out if you haven't!) the pagans have a raw, spastic sound that is everything I seek in a release from this time period. this is sort of a strong showing from the band for a comp released in 1996 of hits from the band. trust I will eventually get around to looking up more from the label. songs I would recommend: yeah yeah, i juvenile, street where nobody lives. but the whole thing is def worth listening to!

various artists - red snerts: the sound of gulcher (1981) I heart dow jones sooooo much...
genre: garage punk, synth punk, post-punk
rating: 10/10

this collection is a good representation of the stacked lineup of gulcher records, including a few hidden gems from their lesser known and less explored bands. when I come back to this in the future I will be looing up more from those bands that are not featured on spotify, but for now the gizmos and dow jones and the dancing cigarettes are filling The Huge Fucking Hole Within Me. gulcher is a small record label that packs a punch with experimental noisy synth-kitted bands and rocking rolling guitars that are reminiscent of the great blues acts that came before. songs I would recommend: midwest can be all right, ladies with appliances, i bet not, peer pressure. gulcher records I challenge you to remix and master the gizmos albums because it really is a shame that they are so blown out and lo=fi you can't decipher the instruments.

andy shauf = norm (2023) [[live performances from andy shauf are really a special treat. the man was made to perform live especially with a band...]]
genre: jazz pop, indie jazz
FFO: jessica pratt, cate le bon
rating: 7/10

I like the jazzier direction this album went compared to his more recent albums, it's stripped down and back to the bare bones like 2016's the party. it carries a similar longing wistful feeling as well. this album more focuses on the throes and mundanities of being in love, with inconsequential songs such as Halloween Store. andy shauf describes such instances so plainly that you tend to fall in love more with his delivery than anything innovative lyrically or politically. this album isn't really making any unexplored claims. I find the title track difficult to listen to in full, just not my favorite. songs I  would recommend: you didn't see, telephone, wasted on you.

a tribe called quest - midnight maurauders (1993)
genre: conscious hip hop
FFO: diggable planets, de la soul
rating: 8.5/10

this album is less well known than the low end theory but dare I say more worth a beginner's introduction to a tribe called quest than the low end theory with songs like electric relaxation and award tour. I remember the first time I heard a tribe called quest in NBA Street: Vol. II, and my life was forever changed. I got that dawg in me (white girl). this album features political notions and sensual themes. I really appreciate the sex appeal of songs like electric relaxation. a tribe called quest made questioning the zeitgeist grooveable again... songs I would recommend: we can get down, sucka n*gga, lyrics to go.

so basically I find these therapeutic to write but torturous to transcribe into spacehey, probably something to do with the image uploading and linking process. please let me know if you liked anything or hated it or think I should be run over by a car. I think I'm going to shorten these to feature only three albums in the future. it's a labor of love, and god I hate working. thanks love you bye,

I totally agree. That album is great. I don't think that A Tribe Called Quest gets enough play. RIP Phife Dawg
