Ok Artfight is over which means I can post all my work for the month!! In this blog post I'm going to include all the art I made in preparation for Artfight, all of my attacks and revenges, and I'll wrap it up with all the art I received during the event; let's get started!

Preparation

Icons

So in the previous year I made custom icons for all my characters but I thought they didn't really represent my art style anymore and I had 4 new characters that I wanted to put on my profile. So I decided to redo the profile icons for all 10 of my characters AND for whatever reason I wanted to make all the icons ANIMATED. This will come back to bite me in the rear in the future.

After fiddling around a bit, I settled for a look where the characters were slightly animated and had the text scrolling over them to make them look like characters from some videogame. I'm super happy with how they turned out but it took me like a week to make them all.

Initially I had intended to make some sort of animated element into each icon, like how, for example, Riesgo blinks sometimes in his, but to keep this little project at a reasonable scale I decided for most of them to draw 3 unique frames to create a little bit of wiggle.

Ref sheet for Brick

My 4 new characters for Artfight was Valento, Lofi, Changbai, and Brick; the first 3 mentioned where characters traded to my on toyhouse by Lii. Brick was a character design that I had a lot of online friends associate with me and I ended up falling in love with it to a point where I adopted her as a sona. Big issue with this is that all other art I made of Brick up to this point was from the waist up meaning that I needed to make an entire ref sheet for her. Since the icon project took over a week, making a ref sheet for Brick was last minuteㅡand when I say last minute I mean that Brick's character profile went up a couple hours before artfight started. What I ended up doing is just drawing the bottom half of one of the frames of a PNGtuber I made of brick awhile back. Anyways here she is!

Overall I'm just really happy with her design, she makes me so happy she's just like me forreal. <3

Attacks!

Doqmeets

This is an artists that I've been following on Newgrounds since the dawn of time so when they announced they had an Artfight and that they would be participating this year, I jumped on the opportunity to have my first attack of the year be of their online sona. On the basis of pure artistic composition and skill, I think this is my best work to come out of the event

At first I put the text at the top that has the date and time only as a way to kind of set an atmosphere to the illustration but coincidentally it was really close to 6:48 PM on a Friday for me so I decided to wait like 9 minutes before posting it so the times would line up. Funny part about this too is that I checked Doqmeets' stream schedule and it turns out they live in the same time zone as me meaning that it was also a Friday at 6:48 PM when it got uploaded.

Kathan

This was a revenge attack against Persica Peach of their character Kathan. I've set an expectation for myself that I make revenges for all the attacks I receive and really don't like being behind on revenges; sadly at the time this artwork was a work in progress for awhile because I was juggling working on Artfight attacks and school work. I'm a little disappointed in myself because I think just a little more work being put into this artwork would've made it a whole lot stronger but it's fine ig. :/

I took the time to make sure the anatomy was correct, he had a cool cool dynamic pose, the colors looked appealing, and the lines were colored but honestly I think a little bit of cell shading and highlights to the hair would've made it so so so much better but ultimately time wasn't on my side for this one and I had other revenges to get to...

Kat

This was a revenge I made for FloothiePie of their character Kat; I made animated Artfight attacks for several people in the past but unfortunately this is the only animated attack I made this year. The reason I decided to animate this character instead of giving them a regular attack is because I thought that their design was simple enough that a simple illustration wouldn't be doing them enough justice.

This one took super duper long but it was good practice for timing charts, which are something that I've dabbled in the past with but this is my first finished work utilizing them. If I were to redo this one I'd go back and fix all the values for this one because they look pretty armature for what I can do.

Bradlee

This attack was made for one of my irl friends Bradlee, who can also be found here on spacehey, of his sona, Bradlee. To contextualize this, awhile back Brad and I played the indie MMO Atlyss together and there's this part in the game where you encounter a small arena where, after killing some enemies, the Slime Diva spawns. Bradlee, with his infatuation of rabbits, fell in love with the character and has been down bad for her ever since. So I more or less made this comic as a way to poke fun at him.

The characters shown in the comic, Bradlee and Brick, are designed off of our characters in Atlyss. I've REALLY wanted to dabble in making a comic someday and I think this serves as good proof that its something I could pull off but DAMN do they take a long time to make; I see some people post weekly comic pages that are fully colored and everything, I think that's a level of dedication that I'd really have to put myself to if I wanted to pull it off. This is probably the first thing I've pumped out in a minute that I've actually been pretty proud of but I can still tell its a little rough around the edges. For context for the icon I made for the attack: On Bradlee's Artfight profile the first thing it says is, "do NOT draw me wearing a SILLY hat that says "I AM DUMB" i am SICK OF IT!!!! STOP IT RIGHT NOW!!!!"

Perr & Aiya

This revenge was made for my good friends Perr and Aiya of their respective sonas: Perr and Aiya. I went with a much more pastel kind of look for this one because I wanted to play around with some new tools that Lii shared with me and I really like how it turned out! This was done 2 DAYS before Artfight ended because for whatever reason the two decided to attack me super late into the month. But since it's their first Artfight I thought I'd do them the curtesy of making a revenge for both of them!

I'm in love with how the colors on this one turned out; Perr's character is just blacks, soft greens, and yellows and Aiya's character is just white which gave me a lot of flexibility in fitting them into a softer pastel scene. The background used for the image was just an old picture from my phone that I took out of my window forever ago but I should probably learn how to digitally paint clouds for future artworks.

Holt

This final revenge was for Raffian of their character Holt! This one was very last minute and I didn't have the time to add much detail past the flat colors and a little bit of coloring in the lineart. I'm upset that I couldn't put more work into this one just as a result of time issues as I literally finished this at midnight of July 31st, which is such a shame because Holt has such a cool character design!

I technically had more time to finish it before the entire event ended but I had a flight at 8AM the following morning and it was around 12:30 AM when I posted it so I spared myself and got some rest. Other than that I think I was able to do this character design some justice, super fun draw!

And that's everything from me for July! Looking back I realized that I pumped out a whole lot more art than I remember, it was a lot of fun! Next up I'll be showing off all the art that I received during this years Artfight!

Closing thoughts

As I mentioned before, I had a lot of fun with this year's Artfight and I'm super pumped for next years! At the time of posting this there hasn't been a team that has been selected as the winners of this years event so I'm rooting for Fossils! I was super happy to see that I got 5 total artworks featuring my sona Brick considering she's a newcomer to my page and I uploaded her basically right before the event began! I'm glad I decided to add more characters because I've found that people are more likely to attack you if you have some good variety for them to choose from. I suppose that, this year, the red dino really spoke to a lot of artists. If you made me art this year and happen to be reading this I want to say thank you so much! I love everything I got this year so dearly, it always makes the event a treat to participate in!
