Hey guys, I saw a video about a girl explaining how she thought that Edgar Degas was Jack the Ripper so I want to rant about without bothering everybody else lol. (This isn't organized, it's just a ramble so I don't go insane ;-;)
Okay, the first thing that really caught my attention was that he painted A LOT, and it was mainly women, typically ballerina's. (hence some of his most famous paintings) But that's not the only reason, typically in the late 1880's painters were able to use human organs for their artwork and I think that could have definitely potentially caused/sparked some obsession with how the female anatomy works and how women work. Which, if you're familiar with the case, Jack in my opinion had to of had some kind of fixation on female anatomy to have enough knowledge for some of his victims. Furthermore, this also makes sense just because the cuts weren't exactly as precise as a surgeon, but the knowledge was definitely somewhat there in order to do the absolutely heinous things he did. Another thing worth mentioning is the hereditary disease that he had, which is called "Frontotemporal Dementia" and it essentially causes the moral compass in your brain to decay which can lead to increased criminal behavior (see why it kind of makes sense for someone to commit these crimes if they had this?). So in light of this, it's also important (kind of) to note that he already wasn't a great person, he was known to be antisemitic. Which later, at one of the victim's crime scenes, there was a sort of antisemitic message written in chalk, but the important part here is that Degas was a pastel artist, so he would've likely been carrying chalk with him, making it possible that the message could have been him.
Also, making trips to and from London weren't difficult considering the trip from Paris to London was only 7 hours approx. If he were to be a suspect, this would actually make it easier to arrive/ be in the city somewhat frequently but would also allow him to fall back on the fact that he technically lives in Paris.
Subsequently he had also at one point, (I believe after the murders?) he had written letters to some of his friends that had high influence about like two pages or more of gossip (I don't exactly know if that was in the letters, but I'm pretty sure the letters were a thing)
This doesn't pinpoint Degas specifically, but I feel like it's important to mention that Police at the time didn't really have much knowledge on what was considered DNA, so the shawl that apparently linked Aaron to the murders, in my opinion really shouldn't be applicable? Not only was the victim a lady of the night, but if she was wearing it when she was attacked the police's DNA was probably on it as well which should have had it dismissed as a valuable piece of evidence since it was technically tampered with. Furthermore, the shawl itself has been passed down to so many people through the years so in return that should've also had it dismissed as evidence.
Another interesting theory, not so much a fact about him is that in his paintings, typically again of ballerina's some of them had no face or some even appeared to have dark lines across their throats which MAY signify how some of the victims actually died. Although this is only a theory, personally I wouldn't find it odd if he did add his alleged victims in his own paintings.
However, this is all I wanted to rant about lolz, I found it extremely interesting to talk about and I would lovee to know anyone's opinions on this theory!
Also fun fact, the original girl who posted this made this theory for funsies until she actually researched it during covid which is crazy!!
