So the other day, I posted on my tiktok about how pretty soon, we're likely to see lots of people using technology coming from the early seventies to mid 2000s. This post did surprisingly well, so I thought I'd share the insight over here!
"What is 'Retro-Technology?'"
Retro-technology is the term I use to describe technology that's become outdated- quite literally "older technology." Thus, a retro-tech rebirth is when that old technology comes back into popularity.
"Why is this taking place?"
There's really two major reasons: the first is nostalgia. A lot of older members of Gen-Z and younger millenials who grew up on the later era of this technology (the early to mid 2000s) have begun to look fondly on the technology at the time. Compared to the much more quiet and almost empty-feeling designs of modern technology, the technology of the 70s-2000s much more colorful and bold. The second reason is because Spotify and Youtube have decided to start requiring user ID for acess to their content, which is a massive invasion of privacy. Despite there being other alternatives, nothing's really stopping other music websites from implementing the same policy, thus, many people have decided to make the switch to physical media.
"Where can I get older technology?"
The least-expensive options would be in thrift stores and possibly facebook marketplace. you could also get these things for a higher price via online stores or sometimes retail stores. If you can, it's best to by secondhand first, as it's less expensive and puts less demand on major corporations to sell them, thus making them less expensive for people who cant buy secondhand.
"Any advice for burning CDs or DVDs?"
Yes: It's important to remember that burning CDs and DVDs for the purpose of distributing them is techically piracy. While it's perfectly okay to share the software you use to do so with friends, note that it should be shared privately, not publicly. When a link used for the purpose of piracy is shared publicly, it risks the chance of it being deleted from the internet for "legal reasons."
That's all for now, thanks for reading!!

if you just so happen to have old cds/floppies, maybeee you should rip them and upload to internet archive if no one else has

I’m glad people are starting to appreciate physical media more despite the sad rise in censorship, invasion of privacy etc by governments. Like, this is stuff you actually own when you buy it - and you don’t get the fear of it being taken away or being put behind a paywall!!
I have around 80 CDs now and use them religiously LMAO, but I also have records, cassettes, and with old tech I’m still using a DSi! I’m getting a Wii this year to play Guitar Hero too :3

Im so glad I got an mp3 right before the phone ban announcement in the US

trends always come back eventually so it's fun seeing the first time old tech returns. the privacy thing is so true too! it's nut just blocking websites it's about the fact that the information can easily be leaked and sold! the other governments are already looking to implement similar stuff

Also, eBay and Depop are pretty good places to find old tech online. Been thinking of getting an mp3 player cus I started downloading all the songs I listen to just to put them in Windows Media Player and stare at the visualizations ( and then switched to Winamp once I couldn't figure out how to fix a bug in the visualizations )
