The Basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is a massive filter feeding shark it gets up to twenty feet in length on average but can get up to forty and are the second largest living shark they get their name from it habit of looking like their basking at the ocean's surface but they really just swim slowly at the surface especially during summer because that's when zooplankton is abundant at the surface but when they were first discovered they were called sunfish before being changed in 1765 to avoid confusion with the Mola Mola they are harmless to humans and feed primarily on plankton they can weigh up to eleven thousand pounds and have a life span of fifty years they are a migratory species and travel thousands of miles and can be found in groups of up to one hundred they have around fifteen thousand tiny teeth about zero point twenty inches long with six rows on their upper jaw and nine rows on the bottom jaw with about one hundred per row which are used for mating they can jump out of the water possibly to dislodge parasites unfortunately Basking sharks are endangered primarily due to overfishing, bycatch, and their slow reproductive rates and their population is still declining with only an estimated less than ten thousand left
