as a creative and a music lover, i hate ai!! one of the biggest music platforms, spotify is using YOUR money to fund an ai military start up. this is not even including all the ai "artists" they are allowing on the app.
im planning on buying a mp3 player and canceling my premium membership.
as much as creating playlist or the "algorithm" helping you find bands, its just not worth it anymore.
not only funding ai, going to your favorite artists website or bandcamp (or even buying merch!!) supports the band more than your streams on spotify ever could.
they also may bring over age verification for "mature" content, making your. upload your id just to use the app.
spotify is NOT worth it anymore. if your paying for premium, buying a 20$ mp3 player will save you much more in the long run, with no censorship or ai!!
lets discuss! what are your thoughts on these recent laws/policies becoming more standard?

I only use Spotify in my browser for built in adblock and extra features lacking in the mobile app, I will never pay a dime for any "Premium Service".
But I had no idea about this AI situation tho, although I'm not surprised; Spotify is a greedy fucking company that wouldn't mind seeing go bankrupt.
I've started moving music onto my PsVita and Nintendo 3ds since I haven't been saving up money to buy an mp3 or a walkman. I've also started ripping music onto my xbox 360!
I really want to get into collecting more physical music or getting music on portable devices on anything that isn't a phone.

I'm so glad I use a mp3
Using an mp3 and downloading songs is SO much better

I will never understand the hatred of AI
I'm going to assume you're just really ignorant.
1. AI data centers are using and polluting water resources in marginalized communities. Numerous communities impacted do not having safe drinking water nor clear air. This is not only detrimental to humans but also the environment. There are supposedly retired coal mines having their lives extended to power these centers, as well as the US government trying to lift restrictions on fossil fuels for them as well. It's actively accelerating the climate crisis.
2. There have been numerous studies concluding that AI not only creates a dependence on it and also contributes to skill regression. We are facing a rapid decline in critical thinking and comprehensive skills.
3. AI is not based off of a sole person's property. It scalps content from the internet without the consent of anyone whether that be art or someone's face.
4. AI is currently being weaponized against women and queer people, there has been numerous cases of their photos being used to put them into pornographic content which they are then harassed with.
5. The company mentioned in this blog is creating and expanding military AI, including war drones. This is military grade AI tech that will be used to target and kill people.
6. AI is being used to collect biometric data, these AI programs are used to identify people from partial images and is dangerous for protestors and anyone vocal against the current administration. These programs also add people to a database, using an algorithm to determine their likelihood of committing crime (with obvious bias instilled into these programs, leading to people in marginalized groups being made into a monolith and discriminated against. These are part of a much bigger issue of surveillance.
7. AI programs are not only accessible to the government. Publicly available AI programs have been used to find the locations of stalking victims by collecting any information, especially from photographs input into these programs. It then crosses references this information with anything available on the web. This has even been shown to work with photos that have no outdoor areas shown within them.
There are a plethora of other reasons why people are against the usage of AI. You choosing not to acknowledge them is a personal issue. The devastating impacts of AI are not worth poorly generated fanfic and pictures, especially when the specific AI mentioned in this post is used by the military against innocent people.

Bu, chatgpt my best friend, did you know that I have the nickname "ghosty" for him? Even though now that you say that... it makes me think I'm talking to an online friend who's being canceled all over the world for organ trafficking, even though he seems harmless in chat.

You are 19 years old. If you spent your time trying to talk to other people, you would have actual friends rather than only speaking to an AI that does not care about you at the expense of millions of people.
You said you didn't understand the hate for AI, I gave you numerous reasons why people are both scared of it and disgusted by it. Rather than actually considering anything, you chose to be parasocial about a bot. You would do much better off with a tamagotchi rather than downplaying and ignoring genuine concerns over AI out of boredom and loneliness.

Calm down bro, I was just joking, I understand your reasons which I didn't know and now I know. You don't have to be hostile, you know? Instead of saying "go talk to real people," you could start by not judging if you don't know the life of the person behind the screen. Very easy to say that when I may not have any friends, but I still appreciate (I guess, because you were quite rude with that comment) that you told me the reasons. I didn't know that and now I can understand it better. I recommend you be a little nicer.

It’s not a 1:1 Spotify alternative, but bandcamp is a decent platform. They now allow creation and sharing of playlists, but the catch is you can only compile music you’ve purchased on the site which incentivizes supporting artists and labels directly. Plus, high quality flac, wav and mp3 downloads. Streaming sucks imo.

this was the last straw when i heard about this. now im fully intending on using my ipod pretty much all the time now.

If anyone's looking for an alternative way to listen to music, there are radio stations all over the internet you can tune into. There's a website quite literally called "Internet-Radio" I use as my go-to. I download the .m3u file when I find it and run it through Winamp, but you can have the player running in your browser too. (Or any program that can handle it. If it has mp3 compatibility it should connect fine- but do not quote me on this :p) It's a fun way to find new things, and there's a radio station for any genre or podcast if you know what to look for. I have no idea how well this works on mobile though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Finally someone talked about this!!
Sending all love to you!

Yes! I agree completely! Invest in physical media. Whether that be CD's, DVDs, printed pictures, etc. With digital media, it can be taken away from you at any moment. Having it right in front of you is the best way. Spotify contributing to A.I. evolvement was the last straw. I remember when I was told to never put my identity out on the internet, now companies like Spotify are asking for it to continue using the app? Hell no.
RATMAN
I'm currently trying to get a discman and some blank CD's to burn my own playlist so I can stop using Spotify! I don't pay for Spotify anyway but that fact that they use sooo much a.i is gross

Thank you so much for talking about this! It’s quite shocking, especially the ai military thing. I hate ai. I also don’t use spotify.

Mp3 player owner here! Tbh, best thing I've invested in. if I buy CD's I get the whole album and more money goes to artists, If I download from the internet, I get songs that wouldn't be on an app like Spotify. No more seeing my money go to some company that doesn't care the least bit for the people that are financing them every month.
+ being able to customize the covers of songs is a positive bonus.

Something about Spotify has been wrong for years now.. I recall a ''Jazz in the rain'' official playlist of theirs that, when inspected beyond a glance and a shuffle, was composed of faceless trios and duos with zero credits to be found.. essentially ghost kitchens for music. Glad people are coming around!
living dead girl
I can’t even afford to buy premium lolz u guess that good tho bc their using the money for bad
VAMPIRE_FREAK
The SECOND I wasn't able to rewind my music or listen to it in PLAYLIST ORDER I left Spotify (2022) and like ever since then I've been downloading music to my phone and then an Mp3 player and started listening to it there! BEST DECISION OF MY LIFEEE!! People need to start doing this more because soon music companies are gonna try to erase how we download music so that THEYYYY can make more money! So start downloading music peoples!!
skeuo <3
or yk, js don’t pay for premium.
willow
Just get VLC and rip cd's onto your phone, no need for a MP3 player
Omgl1illymae.mp3
I totally agree and it's a total scam too when there are so many smaller apps that people upload the music that you can download for free witch is way easier for me and I'm not supporting a bad company
