Is the problem social media and/or our phones, or our obsession with dopamine?

I think we all are aware of the doomscrolling problem. This may lead to us thinking that the problem is social media or our phones (or devices bc I rarely use my phone). But, is it really social media and/or the phone that is the problem?

I've used instagram and tiktok before, yet I never grew addicted to them. My habits when using those platforms never included doomscrolling, which may be why I never became addicted. I always found it weird that I especially never grew addicted to TikTok.

But, there is one platform I had developed an addiction to: YouTube. Many people don't count yt as a social media platform, yet there's people like me who had been addicted to it before. I used to spend hours watching videos, which lead to me procrastinating my responsibilities and neglecting my health. I think all those videos I watched were what's giving me dopamine, which was how I became addicted (at least that's what I theorize).

I guess what I'm trying to say here is that the problem hasn't always been our devices and/or social media, but our obsessed with dopamine. Even when I tried to not use yt, I still find myself having a lot of screentime, and I think it's because I, without thinking, has been trying to get dopamine through other ways, such as scrolling through a website. Realizing this changed my perspective on the mess everyone deals with. The problem has always been our obsession with dopamine.

Now, I may very likely be wrong, so just take all of this with a grain of salt. Obviously, if you need to get rid of any distracting apps, do what you must do. What do you guys think?

Hello, Mr.Machine here

you are right on the money when you described it in habits, anything can become an addiction without the practice of temperance. The most important thing we must do for ourselves is practice willpower and boundaries. All social media doesn't have to be bad if you hold the right distance from it and do not become obsessed. Because it does provide value to our lives, just as it hurts it as well. It is up to the individual to overcome the algorithm and addictive tendencies. If I had a choice I wouldn't use social media as much as I do now, But to be a music maker is to be an influencer as well. But even still, I keep my boundaries proper, even a machine can become addicted.

keep thinking deeply

i think that maybe we are searching for things we don't have or we wish we have
so we don't have to be in "real life"
and i think its good if we know that we are addicted.
like we realise it

wish u all the best w that. let's do our best together!!
