The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball has 20 episodes, and all of them are around 12 minutes long. I watched all the episodes and decided to share my thoughts.
EP01 The Burger
For the first episode, I wasn't really hooked. I came to the show with expectations of it being like the previous episodes, and that was my standard for all the episodes in the future, so I'll be ranking them based on how much I enjoyed them and how much they would fit earlier seasons.
IMO, this episode was a real meh. It seems like the writers just got here and only started warming up for it all. I liked some jokes, but the jokes only; they didn't feel cleverly placed, more like squished between scenes. I was a bit sad the whole show is gonna be like this, but... well, you'll see as you read the other episodes. The whole episode was about megacorporations and all the jokes were funny on their own (Larry wearing a skirt because women are paid 30% less and the boss wants to save money even if he already has too much), but they weren't - as I said - cleverly placed. I remember comparing it to a family-friendly, less funny South Park episode.
EP02 The Assistant
This episode was another meh, but a better one than The Burger. The 3D animation when Nicole entered the VR world with her AI assistant was actually really nice. I didn't like the ending, the "our family is quirky but that's what makes it family" puenta seemed maybe a bit cringe? But it's the usual motive in TAWOG, so I could let it slide.
EP03 The Distance
Okay, this is the episode where I actually started enjoying the show. The scene where Gumball called Darwin after going to his room was pretty funny. "You breathed a few times? You and your adventures!" got a genuine chuckle out of me; that's a win. Also, I feel like the online chatroom might be inspired by Club Penguin or Panfu. It felt like a bit of a weird, useless chime in. It was eh.
EP04 The Thing
First, the description of the episode... "Richard must retrace the memories of his day in order to figure out what “the thing” is, so Nicole’s family dinner with Granny Jo Jo won’t be another epic failure." You know what these kids say, epic skibidi rizz!! Jk, I just noticed it as I am writing this, just found it funny.
Hey, this one was good! Feels like it could belong in earlier seasons, Richard not knowing what "the thing" is was a reasonably relatable situation that obviously was turned wacky Gumball style. I don't really have any complaints.
EP05 The Butts
Felt like a classic Gumball episode, even if one of my least favorite kinds. Butt jokes can be funny, but here it was not as entertaining. I don't know why. Maybe I'm growing up and butt jokes aren't funny... I need me crossword... Me crossword, Gerald... I kinda didn't pay attention to what was happening on the screen, if I have to be honest.
EP06 The Traffic
An episode focused on Anais! Felt like it could fit the earlier seasons too! Maybe because of the number of crimes they committed there. Oh jeez. I really don't have much to say.
EP07 The Astrological
This one definitely feels more modern. Putting Mr. Small here was definitely a wise choice... Well, he's the character most associated with alternative medicine and all that other stuff. Explored Gumball's and Penny's relationship, which is always good! Love them. Classic use of subversion of expectations, something TAWOG is most famous for, I think.
EP08 The Cheerleader
Another fitting episode! I know I keep saying how the episode feels like it fits into the earlier seasons, but that's the bar for me. I watched this show to watch more classic TAWOG, just like - I think - most people. Granny Jo Jo just going on random events is something grandmas do for some reason. Why are they all on public transport all the time? Where the hell are you even going? Pretty funny! "Well, dude, I think we're suffering some trauma, but at least it's not intergenerational."
EP09 The Boring
An episode this time focused on Molly. Honestly forgot she's a dinosaur! I never actually thought what she might represent! I just thought she represents SOMETHING. A lizard? Maybe not, but some actual animal for sure. Gumball was an asshole, love that.
EP10 The Teacher
I forgot what was happening here. I'm serious. All I can remember is that there were a lot of subversions of expectations, which I pointed out during a talk with my friends after I finished the 10 episodes yesterday.
EP11 The App
I am more than sure Clik-Sap is an allegory to TikTok, well, obviously. Elmore+ is Facebook; the kids say only adults use it, and in earlier seasons, it's used like the site. On Clik-Sap, you record videos, and it ruins your brain. "Like and subscribe" is obviously taken from YouTube. Basically, all about apps, as the title of the episode alludes. I liked it! Can't say anything more. Also, I hate TikTok, so I'll add some points for that.
EP12 The Entrance
Was the Koologne supposed to be some substance? Like alcohol or drugs? Did the kids get high and/or drunk? I don't know. The cartoonish 2D animation around the end was really cool, fuckin' sick if I say so myself.
EP13 The Letter
Darwin and Carrie! I forgot what was happening there. I apologize.
EP14 The Gut
Gahhhh, I didn't like it too much... Not the same way, I didn't like The Burger, but a different, more... ehh.. way. Not a meh, but an ehh.. If that makes sense?
EP15 The Wrinkle
I liked it! I really did. I liked the song and the paper scribble animations; they were very cute. This reminded me of that one episode where Darwin got allergic to stupidity and sneezed every time something stupid happened, so all the time. This was another "our family is quirky" episod,e but it was executed way better than The Assistant.
EP16 The Gourmet
At the end, he didn't get the gourmet... But he got a lesson! 🤓 Masami-centered (kinda) episode!! Enjoyed it a lot, it did feel like something Gumball would do. I kinda want that gourmet, too. And chicken nuggets for school lunch, too.
EP17 The Pool
When Mrs. Robinson first started being soft and all, I was actually scared they changed her personality for some reason (┬┬﹏┬┬) Subversion of expectations so good it got me too, I suppose. Mr. Robinson's boomer speech about how he hates his wife feels like every "Father, I cannot click the book" comic ever. Another episode that could be in the earlier seasons.
EP18 The Portrait
So, big spoiler. Nicole's parents got divorced. A friend spoiled it for me, but indeed, they got it. It was obviously another gag as they're not very relevant for every episode's plot. It didn't feel like a shock, and I think the writers didn't strike for that, especially with the "I know it's a lot to take in," which was redirected at the suitcases. Yet another episode that successfully got the title of "I can see it in earlier seasons"! And fuck the toucan guy. His puns were kinda funny tho. Like dad joke funny. Thumbs up!
EP19 The Climb
I secretly hoped that someone would point out that Gumball is a cat so his fear of climbing is a bit ridiculous, but we got a good episode nontheless! The end reminded me of that one video that said that if a bunch of naked minors robbed a store, it would be a perfect crime since the monitoring tapes would be classified as CP. Okay, forget what I said. Good episode. Don't take this out of context. Or even in context.
EP20 The Amadain
The episode the "my girlfiriend's parents hate me" joke is finally over. I kinda enjoyed it? I don't know, really. I have nothing meaningful left to say.
Sooo... That's all. If you watched the show, you can let me know your opinion in the comments. Maybe you disagree with some, maybe you want me dead, lmk!
FAREWELL!!!!
Also sorry for the inactivity, my laptop was going through something for several months now but it finally got fixed, I will be more active and sometimes post random things and rants, cus that's what I do best. Bye!!
