I know I wrote a blog a few days ago about losing Ozzy Osbourne. Nice to see more tributes flooding in, keeping the political nonsense to a dull roar. I am all for freedom of expression but thankfully Ozzy is making sure we never lose sight of one thing: WE'RE ONLY HERE FOR A SHORT TIME!
And a good time, hopefully!
Now then...I have 10 songs written. It was 11, but I discarded two of them to the B pile. So wouldn't that be nine? No, I wrote something yesterday that really took me by surprise. I was messing around with a simple two-chord progression and thought "Ah this is nice but not going anywhere." Or so I thought.
I have an Orange CR20LDX amp, which has been discontinued for a long time. Yet I snagged one used at Guitar Center two years ago for $100! It has onboard effects and they sound cool. I use this amp when I record ideas onto my Tascam digital recorder. I normally use chorus and some delay to beef things up. But this time I dialed up the flanger effect.
WHEEEEE!
Suddenly these two chords came alive! And then the rest of the song followed?! Not the first time that happened but when I was done recording and listening back, I looked at my hands and thought "Did I just create this?!" It's rare that I come up with something that jars my senses real hard. When I wrote "Turn To Rust" back in 2017, that was the only other time I can recall where my every hair on my body stood at attention. It was THAT good. And it became a minor "hit" for me.
This song reminds me of something Steve Vai might do, only I'm nowhere near his level. I must have listened to this demo twelve times, no joke. Again, that's rare of me. I am proud of the newest batch of songs but will not say "These are the best songs I've written!" That's a trap a lot of musicians fall into. If the public wants to say that, then great. Me? No. I will always say "These are good/great, and am proud of them." Simple as that.
But now comes the unenviable task of finding musicians to help bring these songs to life. I may just order EZ Drummer and tackle things alone like I did with LAYERS OF TIME. Tedious but gets the job done. And nobody there to tell me that they hate or don't understand what I'm doing.
I'm a diminished chord stuck in a major 7 world.
