A lot of people that I know personally are aware of me having dreamed to be a filmmaker since I was a kid.
Well, it's with great pleasure that I get to share the sick ass news of me finally attaining my dream camera! This is a Canon XL1S, the same camera that filmed 28 Days Later! :D
It was first released in 1998 & was originally around $5k, but I got mine from eBay for only $500 after scoping around first for a few months for the best deal. Several of the ones I was sifting through had some wear &/or were missing attachments, but this one is in pristine condition. Everything works like a dream still because the guy it came from barely ever used it when he bought it brand new. It comes with all of the attachments plus several extra batteries.
Only thing is that the footage records onto Mini DV tapes. The seller said once he's back home from traveling abroad in the fall that he's going to send me some tapes, but I'm planning to order some online. But with the tapes, I'll have to convert them into digital format. It's not that difficult though, so it's only a small downside.
I honestly don't know why more filmmakers didn't choose to use this camera more. 28 Days Later is the only big film that used it, shockingly, but I absolutely love the standard definition quality. Many people would likely question my choice to go with a 30 year old standard definition camera over a newer HD or 4K camcorder, but honestly I love the look of standard.
The picture quality with this camera is just nice & I like the look. The atmosphere I'm going for with my films is a lot grungier & down to earth as opposed to a lot of modern day movies. There's a specific vibe I'm going for that modern day cameras just wouldn't be able to capture.
I am so ecstatic about this & now I just have to continue working toward building my film editing rig. <3
Here & there I'll post more updates on my production progress:)
To many people's surprise, I'm planning to write comedies, not horror. I still intend to have my action-horror comic series, but I really want to make people laugh honestly. As much as I love horror, I don't think it's great that it's all people are consuming now on top of all of the doom & gloom in the world. We need funny ass movies with a good message again dude. Desperately. Everyone is so fucking sad & is just ready for the world to end, we need something to break it up & make people have some kind of hope again forreal.
I want to bring back films that are just raunchy ass fun. I grew up watching all of the comedies from the 80s- all the way through the early 00s with m family & that era of comedy was peak so I take a lot of inspiration from it. Especially movies like American Pie, Dazed & Confused, Old School, Dude Where's My Car?, Friday etc.
I could go on a while, but I'll just leave it there for now. Super stoked for what's all coming! So far there are three different screenplays in the process of being written. Which one we're going to do first is what's up in the air, but it will al come down to which one will be the easiest to budget first.
