What Is True Courage? From Within a Questioning Mind
What does courage mean to you?
Is it jumping into action without thinking in a moment of crisis, or is it pausing, thinking, weighing the risks?
Most people define courage as a first impulse.
They say, “The one who acts immediately is brave.”
But I don’t agree with that.
To me, courage is not acting without thinking — it’s taking a step despite knowing the consequences.
Because anything done without thought isn’t courage — it’s recklessness, and sometimes just plain foolishness.
Being brave begins with asking yourself whether the action might cause more harm than good.
Running to save someone may look like courage.
But what if saving them leads to something even worse?
Sometimes, courage is hidden in not saving someone.
That may sound cruel.
But real courage doesn’t come from emotional impulse — it comes from conscious responsibility.
It’s being able to say, “I must do this because it’s my duty.”
It’s easy to call something cowardice when you’re only seeing a small part of the picture.
But sometimes, the courage to let someone die is greater than the instinct to save them.
Because maybe — just maybe — they don’t deserve that sacrifice.
I know, it sounds harsh.
But true courage can be defined not just by action — but also by inaction.
Now you may ask:
“Are you brave enough to say all this?”
Maybe I am, maybe I’m not.
But that’s not really the point.
Does the answer help you, or does it simply satisfy your curiosity?
I wrote this to open a conversation.
I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Courage isnt always the "first one to take a step", sometimes it can be taking a step back. It takes courage to change your path, think in a different way, or even stop yourself from following what others do. Courage stems from fear. Without fear there is no courage. It takes courage to know and accept that it is what it is. For me, Courage will always be self restraint and control. Courage would be an embodiment of tolerance and patience. Courage comes in all different shapes and colours. Its one's courage that leads them to let life sway or string them along. Courage isnt innate, its learnt and curated in a way in everyone's life in their own way.
