This isn't a very polished idea yet but I wanted to get it out there just because I think the Deltarune fandom when it's finished may have a big AU obsession and I already do.
It's inspired by the many swap AUs of Undertale so if I had to name it would call it Heroswap because the premise is just replacing the heroes of light with older members hometown when they were young, essentially making the game take place a generation earlier.
Swaps and the justifications for them
Asgore will take the place of Kris. Out the gate this is one of the weirder decisions I had to make but I think it's probably the best one. The only real justification is that Kris in the prophecy is only referred to as "A cage with human soul and parts" and in Undertale Asgore collected human souls so I think the idea of him being possessed by one is a dark but fitting parallel. in Undertale you could say he was in a more metaphorical way controlled by them because he felt compelled to collect more despite his own moral aversion to it.
Undyne will take the place of Susie. It was very tempting to put Gerson here and that is the most logical choice but making Undyne Susie means Gerson can be the town police which parallels his connection to Undyne in Undertale; and the idea of Undyne bullying Asgore like Susie did to Kris is a fun subversion of her being a knight to the king in Undertale.
Please don't think too hard about the Implications of Alphys replacing Ralsei. I wanted to make Ralsei not just Ralsei but making him Asriel would be boring and not really fit the age of the rest like this line up does and making it these three makes it three monsters that already had some connection in Undertale.

ANOTHER IDEA: For the weird route I was genuinely inspired by those "firegrave" shitposts but I wanted to come up with a fun name. Pyre seemed like an obvious choice to replace grave but firepyre is redundant so Brightpyre I think implies not just funeral fire but a powerful one. I think Toriel replacing Noelle makes sense on a basic aesthetic level but Asgore and Toriel already don't have a good relationship so the very bad route involving the player forcing them closer makes sense.
