i had a lesbian movie marathon a few months ago (that i honestly have to continue..... i actually was going to post this during pride month but being neurodivergent is hard and can sometimes make watching movies hard as well sooooo yeah i'm a month late but..... it's okay every month is pride month if u are gay am i right) and i felt like it's been too long since i made a movie list, so now is the time!!!! i had so much fun watching and rewatching these movies and i really recommend them....... let's get into it shall we

kamikaze girls (2004) - directed by tetsuya nakashima

momoko, a not so simple girl who lives in the countryside of japan and is obsessed with all things lolita and the brand 'baby, the stars shine bright', comes to meet ichiko, a girl who is part of an all girls biker gang, after momoko decides to sell her dad's yakuza clothes to have more spending money. the two, who are complete opposites, develop an expectedly unexpected friendship that can be read as something beyond that.
my all time favorite wlw movie....... first introduced to me by one of my besties ashley (if u aren't new to my blog posts u definitely know who she is) and later rewatched a few times, the latest being in march of this year with bela and introducing it to her!!!!! this movie is just so me..........
i am obsessed with the dreamcore aspects it has from the way it is filmed/edited to the way the story is told, this movie is just a big lesbian escape into a magical candy lesbian world. i can identify with both main characters a lot, and i like the opposites dynamic going on between them. notably i'm particularly fond of the animated scene of momoko imagining herself in a lolita futuristic scenario where she dies wearing a dress from her beloved 'baby' brand. the only flaw this movie has is that momoko and ichiko's relationship isn't explicitly romantic......... but it's heavily implied likeeeee let's be serious now
this movie really is an enjoyable experience and i totally recommend it to any sapphics looking for lighthearted wlw content!!!!!!!!

a bride for rip van winkle (2016) - directed by shunji iwai

disappointed with life and all the misfortunes she encounters, nanami finds a job as a maid through a friend of an online friend where she ends up as a house sitter. there, she works along mashiro, a girl she met at one of her previous jobs. her vibrant personality awakens feelings in nanami, but their days together aren't a promise of happiness.
what's a lesbian without doomed yuri am i right........ i tried to keep the synopsis as brief as possible because i genuinely believe this movie is better experienced when u don't know what to expect from it other than it being a wlw movie, but do keep in mind it touches on subjects such as terminal illnesses and suicide. the first half of it can be a bit boring at first if it's ur first watch, but i promise it's soooooooo worth it!!!!! definitely my second favorite wlw movie and i have really fond memories of the last time i rewatched it which was with mia, one of my online besties, at their beach house i went to visit for their birthday

the watermelon woman (1996) - directed by cheryl dunye

cheryl is an aspiring filmmaker that wants to make her first movie project on the "watermelon woman", or fae richards, a black actress from movies from the 1930s which she goes on many lesbian adventures to find out about, and discovers more about herself as a lesbian and lesbian history.
this movie was made with the lesbian gaze for the lesbian gaze. i kept forgetting it wasn't a documentary, because it felt like cheryl was speaking directly to us about her exciting discoveries about fae at all times. cheryl felt like a close friend, and she made fae feel like that to the audience as well. the fact that fae is a fictional character is amazing, because she felt so real. i learned a lot about lesbian history with this movie, and it was an amazing experience

water lilies (2007) - directed by celine sciamma

marie pretends to have an interest in swimming as a way to get closer to floriane, a girl she is interested in who is part of the competitive swimming team and has the reputation of being a slut. as the two grow closer, they explore their sexualities together, and marie learns that what people say about floriane might not be true.
something about lesbian stories with water really resonate with me.......
anyways, i can relate a bit to marie and how she feels unexperienced compared to other people her age, but i feel like i'm comfortable enough in being aroace to not let that bother me anymore. i think the only thing that makes me extremely uncomfortable in this movie is the fact that the actors were minors. i definitely think sexuality in our teenage years should be explored as it is an important part of it, but i think they could've cast people over the age of 18 to portray these teenagers. also do keep in mind that this movie touches briefly on the theme of pedophilia.

d.e.b.s. (2004) - directed by angela robinson

the sat test hides a secret test within it - one where you can become a spy! it follows 4 students from this secret academy that trains girls to be spies while they investigate the most well known female criminal lucy diamonds. however, the girl with the perfect score in the secret test ends up falling in love for the not-so criminal...
oh my god. lesbians. in lesbian spy university!!!!!!!!!! are you kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!! this movie is so silly and so amazing. u would never expect a lesbian love story to come out of it. not to mention devon aoki, jordana brewster and meagan good are extremely nice to look at throughout the movie. it's just a lighthearted lesbian love story movie we all need from time to time. i wish more lesbian movies were this silly

blue (2002) - directed by hiroshi ando

kirishima's life in a seaside town of japan begins to blossom as she develops feelings for her classmate endo and becomes closer to her. however, as she knows more about endo, she finds out more about herself as well.
this movie perfectly encapsulates the feeling of not knowing if a girl really likes u or not. i think that can be especially confusing in wlw relationships. i love how bittersweet this movie feels, and how the color blue is used. everything kind of has a blue tint to it. also, as an ocean aficionado, i love how the ocean is an important part of it. i think it's really sweet how kirishima finds a passion for art as well, as it is kind of similar to my relationship with art right now

thanks for reading until here!!!!! let me know if u watched any of these movies and ur thoughts about it!!!!! if u haven't watched them yet, please do and share ur thoughts. let me know if there are any types of movies u want me to talk about, since this is a hobby for me!!!!! also, feel free to check out my letterboxd!!!!!
