I am actually so happy that we FINALLY got some new Smiling Friends content after over a year since the season 2 finale. I honestly thought that we would be forced to wait until the fall before we got anymore content for it, with the content being season 3. So seeing the short on the Adult swim TikTok account definitely caught me off guard when I first saw it.
The animation for it was so SMOOTH, like wth. When comparing it to the animation that was in season 1 of the show, it has a lot more natural-ish (nothing in this show is natural) movement for the characters and the line-art is a lot more clean and thinned out. And the facial expressions that each character did, even the more minuit ones, were really cool to see, and I hope we get to see more of it in the next season.
Also, I want to talk about the dialog in this short and how it applies some continuity/somewhat connects to some of the previous episodes. Like, when Pim brings up the fact that he’s been bothered by and deeply insecure about his eyes, it ties back to season 2, episode 7 “The Magical Red Jewel (aka Tyler Gets Fired)”, when Pim is talking to Oscar about how he shouldn’t be insecure about his eye and not being so hard upon himself, since Pim also has some strange looking eyes and likely went through the same issues (maybe is still even dealing with) that Oscar went through. Oscar then proceeded to tell him that he does have having strange looking eyes in a derogatory way and started to laugh at him, which then caused the rest of the ENTIRETY of Spamtopia to laugh at Pim as well. And I think this definitely shattered any confidence Pim had about his eyes and led him to go with doing the surgery.
And then Charlie saying that he wasn’t aware that Pim was that insecure about his eyes, and that he actually viewed Pim’s eyes as one of the most iconic parts of his look (besides his exposed nerve/hair?), which shows a major detail in his character where Charlie sometimes (key word is sometimes since it’s a 50/50 for if Charlie’s actually does try to do something before its too late) doesn’t do/say anything until it’s too late to really do anything. There’s a couple episodes where this is sorta brought up but a good example would be the “Desmond’s Big Day Out” episode. With Charlie not really doing anything to help out Desmond and left Pim to try to cheer him up throughout most of the episode until Pim “breaks” and Charlie is left to deal with Desmond. And how does Charlie deal with Desmond? He tries to show Desmond an ant on the floor to cheer him up, then once that happens and it doesn’t work, he takes him back to their office so that Charlie can report back to Mr. Boss that they weren’t able to make the client smile. (Also, the “Charlie Dies and Doesn’t Come Back” episode brings up this detail about Charlie’s character but I don’t feel like writing anymore about this)
Besides all of that, this was a 10/10 short, although I do wish that Allan made a slight appearance in it, similarly to how they showed Glep in this short.
