Disclaimer: This is a blog about my thoughts and feelings on the subject. It is not intended to be informing or fact. I say this because I do not want people saying that I am wrong for feeling the way that I do.
I know the title sounds absolutely insane but once I get into what I wanted to discuss hopefully it will make more sense. This is something I've discussed before, though I've never discussed it on here specifically. So, this is a first. I'm a little worried on how this blog will be received but even so I still really wanted to talk about this. This is a really niche passion of mine and although I've discussed it before like I mentioned, I wanted to give a deeper and thorough explanation on this topic because I feel it runs a lot deeper than most seem to believe. I'm writing this on a whim with zero pre-planning so please be kind to me if my writing seems frantic and disorganized:
If the RainbowDash jar jokes isn't the most renowned incident in the MLP community, so much so that even people outside the community are aware of it, the next runner-up would have to be the absolute flurry of RainbowDash "I'm not a lesbian" memes. For the people who have no idea what I'm talking about I'll include some images.
These are the more well recognized ones I was able but there are so many images that were made of RainbowDash saying how she isn't queer or people arguing against the belief of her being queer. Depicting Rainbow in an angry way, showing her being outraged, insulted or upset. If anyone is at all aware of how the MLP/Brony community was during this time you can take one look at these and dismiss it as people projecting their internalized homophobia, but I feel that it's more than that. People had no issues with accepting the headcannon of Braeburn (Applejack's cousin) being gay, so why is it a problem when it comes to RainbowDash? Though I have no evidence to back up my claim I whole-heartedly believe that the reasoning behind it is that men cannot bare the idea of a woman being unattainable or out of reach to them.
I personally thought that the queer-coding of RainbowDash was pretty obvious, same applies for Applejack, but of course everyone needs to have those things stated outright to them in order for it to be "canon". Which is really just an excuse to ignore the obvious hints and clues so they can continue living comfortably with the idea that their pony waifu is straight through and through and has eyes for them only. I always felt it was really interesting just how many men in the MLP community seemed to be infatuated with RainbowDash specifically, considering who she is as a character. Rainbow reeks of confidence and personality. Loves validation but is already well aware of her skills and talents and isn't afraid to show them off. As a result she ends up coming across as egotistical in the process. She means well but is very straight forward and blunt to a fault. Because of her personality, nature, and interests she's naturally quite masculine. A woman such as this would be every man's worst nightmare. There is no leeway for them to insert themselves into their lives, therefore they cannot create that relationship where the woman feels as though she needs him and will depend on him completely. So they chastise them instead. They'll call them a bitch, that they're the one with the problem, how men could never love them, but yet in this case they're willing to make an exception for their favorite character from their favorite show.
RainbowDash is fictional. Every character from MLP is fictional. You can tear apart and mold them however you choose to, perceive them in ways that are unique to the perception of others, assign them traits to further broaden their character, it's one of the most appealing aspects of shows like this. If a middle-aged Brony that's spent 1/3 of his life living in his mothers basement and avoids every ray of sunlight like he's a vampiric wants to break down and rebuild RainbowDash's character into this weak submissive woman that can't fend for herself, they have the freedom to do that. RainbowDash for me is a character that holds a very deep and interesting place in my heart. She was one of the first girl crushes I ever had, which was roughly when I was about 7 or 8. Having to come to terms with the fact that I was queer at such a young age was a very isolating experience. Even so, I still love who she is as a character. The idea of changing her to try and make her more palatable for myself is something I wouldn't even dream of doing, the same goes for all the other characters I love. So, when seeing other people do that exact thing it's hard not to feel frustrated. If they're your favorite character like you claim they are, why are you changing them to something they're not?
Quick side note one of the best things to come out of Appledash being canonized at the end of MLP was that it was official confirmation that RainbowDash was queer. I personally never saw the appeal of Appledash, I always preferred Twidash myself, but it would be wrong of me to ignore the good that came out of it. As a lesbian myself, being able to see that kind of representation especially in something I love so much means a lot.
This obsession men had and possibly still have with RainbowDash's sexuality is weird. You cannot convince me that it isn't. To be this upset over the idea of a character you like being queer is insanity to me. I'm not saying that every single man that likes MLP or likes RainbowDash specifically is like this, but this does seem to be the case for a lot of you. This subject is of course completely open for discussion. I'm very curious to hear how other people feel about this.

Mayday
This was such a interesting read!
When i was in brony spaces i remember coming across this meme all the time and always thinking it was such a entitled take. Especially with they way they framed rainbow as some defenses victim of these "horrible" headcanons about her. The flanderization of every single mlp character really needs to be studied
Would love to hear more of your thoughts about mlp both the show and the fandom
kiko!
I don't have an opinion of things like this lolol
mlp is one of those obsessions where i enjoy it by myself and don't interact with the fandom or get merch. I barely scratched the surface of it's media and I don't think I ever want to dig deeper.
but I do appreciate the insight, I never knew about this 'issue' :o
+2
Thats totally fair. I have a friend who got into mlp way after the Bronies began to die down, and he feels that it was definitely for the best he got to experience it that way. Although i have a lot of nostalgia and love for the show and all the fanart and animations and amvs made to cheesy pop songs, i dont think id want to experience it again. Looking back on it is much more enjoyable than experiencing it in the moment. This issue isnt just limited to RainbowDash specifically, it extends to the rest of the cast too. Really it all just ties back into "male loneliness" and porn addiction which isnt all that surprising LOLL
