Why Do Men Hate Rom-coms, But Love Adam Sandler?

Men will say they hate rom-coms (romantic comedies), but so many Adam Sandler movies are just some random guy (acted by Adam Sandler) going through some type of event in his life and he ends up with the girl at the end. An Adam Sandler movie is basically just a rom-com with a male lead. If you don't see it yet, let me show you.

Enemies to lovers: Pixels and Blended

Memory loss trope: 50 First Dates

"I don't date _____", but they end up dating them: Happy Gilmore

Fake dating: Mr. Deeds

Sci-Fi romance: Pixels

I'll explain each one (these all contain spoilers, but I'll use as little detail is possible for those who haven't seen them)

Pixels:

Pixels is a film where tapes of kids playing arcade games in a competition in the 80s is found by intelligent life in space and they see it as a declaration of war. Adam Sandler's character, Sam Brenner who's job is to set up gaming consoles/equipment for costumers is originally enemies with love interest Violet van Patten (acted by Michelle Monogan). This makes it both a sci-fi romance and enemies to lovers film.

Blended:

Blended is a film where two characters (Jim Friedman, acted by Adam Sandler and Lauren Reynolds, acted by Drew Barrymore) that both hate each other have to stay in the same hotel room during a vacation and eventually fall in love.

50 First Dates:

50 First Dates is a film where Henry Roth (acted by Adam Sandler) falls in love with and starts dating Lucy Whitmore (acted by Drew Barrymore) who lives every day the same due to a condition that caused her to forget everything that happens the day before.

Happy Gilmore:

Happy Gilmore is a film where and aspiring hockey player (Happy Gilmore, acted by Adam Sandler) becomes a golfer. A woman doing PR for a golfing competition he's in (Virginia Venit, acted by Julie Bowen) says she doesn't date golfers, but ends up dating Happy around halfway through the film.

Mr. Deeds:

Mr. Deeds is a film where a man named Longfellow Deeds that prefers to go by "Deeds" and is acted by Adam Sandler is thought to be the rightful heir to a large fortune. A producer for a news channel named Babe Bennet (acted by Winona Ryder) pretends to date him to get information and footage for the news channel falls in love with him during the process. They end up together at the end of the film.

So, why do men seem to hate on rom-coms so much? Maybe the issue was never the romance, maybe the issue was the lead. Do they not like that she has standards or preferences? Do they not like that she doesn't do what's called "dressing for the male gaze"? Or maybe they just don't like that the lead is a woman? With misogyny being such a big issue, I wouldn't be surprised. For example, how many men reacted to the Barbe Movie. They were complaining that it was a movie all about women and that Barbie wouldn't date Ken (even though she wasn't into him). Once I started thinking about it, it felt the same. Feel free to share your thoughts on this in the comments!!
