Generally, I think about why characters are the way they are for backstories !! As an example, I few of my characters are just normal happy people, but their parents suck or people around them sucked, so they try to be the person they want to see in the world.
Just random traits can be explained away or NOT. make it completely unreasonable or unexplained WHY
I dunno, it's a bit confusing, sorry
thanks this advice could help with some of my characters

I also have no experience on in writing, but I love making up the most miniature background details for characters in my DND campaign with my friends. I think the key part of crafting a backstory for your characters is to think about their current form & how they got to that place, y'know? What formed their personality, what was around them that maybe influenced how they dress or speak, where'd they grow up? That last part especially. I feel like we either grow up in alignment with our environment/parents and stick with that, or we eventually branch off out of spite or just make it known to ourselves that we are unique individuals separate from all that stuff. Apologies for the lack of proper advice, but hopefully there is some use to gleaned from what I've said.
