Best Horror movies of 2021

Hello friends!

Hundreds of horror movies are made every year so I haven't seen them all, but here's my favorites. What horror films did you enjoy this year?

1. Last Night in Soho
Edgar Wright delivers his best film to date with this dazzling, immersive masterpiece. The visuals and effects are stunning, the story has depth, the characters are great. We sat in the theater in silence for a few moments after the credits rolled. My friends and I loved it so much we were speechless.

2. Sator
Featuring actual footage of the filmmaker's grandmother telling her strange tales of a supernatural being she referred to as Sator, there's nothing quite like this movie. Slow, creepy, and terrifying.

3. Jakob's Wife
Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, From Beyond) rules in this poignant Vampire comedy about finding your identity and getting out of the shadow of your partner. Also blood, lots of blood.

4. Psycho Goreman
Come for the wacky 90s style Power Rangers, TMNT meets Evil Dead craziness, stay for the solid characters and realistic family that holds it all together.

5. Halloween Kills
I prefer the Halloween sequels that break some rules, try crazy stuff so naturally I loved Halloween Kills. It's got the dark humor, mixed with gory horror and light social commentary that reminded me of fun 90s stuff like People Under the Stairs or They Live. The Shape was brutal and a natural progression of the boogeyman we were introduced to in Carpenter's original.

6. The Manor
This movie floored me. I had a close bond with my grandma, who passed away 19 years ago and it still feels like a recent memory. The Manor is all about an older woman checking herself into an old folks home that seems to have a supernatural threat. Her bond with her grandson was everything to me. Beautiful, haunting film.

7. Candyman
Nia DaCosta's sequel to the brilliant Candyman (92) is a solid film that stays true to the heart of the original. My favorite thing are the sillouette, marionette flashbacks. So stylish and haunting.

8. Censor
The 80s UK setting and juxtaposing horror censorship with emotional "censorship" really works. Strong visuals and a haunting atmosphere propel this twisty horror show.

9. Malignant
James Wan goes wild with this one! Heavily inspired by the weirdest 80s horror (think Demons, Basket Case, Re-Animator) this movie is a cult movie treasure especially about halfway through when things go absolutely insane. Love it.

10. Fear Street 1994
I list 1994 but I loved all three films in this trilogy. 3 movies, three time periods, all telling one fun horror story, it's an ambitious undertaking that director Leigh Janiak executes on all levels. It's a blast!
