Originality Is Dead (And That’s Kinda Our Fault)

“Originality Is Dead (And That’s Kinda Our Fault)”

Have you ever scrolled through your feed and felt like you’re looking at the same person over and over again? Same outfit. Same captions. Same inside jokes. Same taste in music, hair, humor, opinions. It’s weird. Like the internet cloned one personality and passed it around like a party favor.

We used to joke about NPCs—people who move through life on autopilot. But if we’re being real, a lot of us are playing that part now. Mindlessly reposting things we don’t really believe, dressing a certain way because TikTok told us it was “clean girl summer” or whatever the trend of the week is. We’re not thinking—we’re following. Fast. Without blinking.

And it’s not even about being a “follower” in a cringe, motivational-speaker kind of way. It’s deeper than that. It’s about what happens when we stop asking why.

Why do I like this?

Why do I believe this?

Why do I feel like I have to post this?

We’re scared to be different now. Not because we don’t want to stand out—but because we don’t want to be excluded. It’s easier to be a copy than a question mark.

But maybe we should start being question marks. Not rebels without a cause. Just… humans who stop and think. People who actually have a filter—not for our faces, but for our thoughts. Who ask, “Does this feel like me, or am I just blending in?”

We can’t fix this overnight. But we can slow down. Unplug for a second. Do things that don’t get posted. Wear something because you like how it feels. Post something that doesn’t get likes. Listen to a song that isn’t trending. Say something honest, even if it’s not the popular take.

You might be surprised what happens when you stop looking sideways and start looking in.

Originality isn’t dead. It’s just buried under a million reposts.

Let’s dig it back up.

I feel like this is because the whole concept of sub-cultures, especially on the internet, has faded so much. A large chunk of the population is on the same 3 apps looking at the same content, the same trends, listening to the same trending music. Those few social media apps have completely taken over and made the forums and small sub-culture spaces completely obsolete.

And we do have lots of different 'aesthetics' now, but they go in and out of style before you can even say 'clean girl aesthetic'.

Everything is just too big and fast nowadays.

for me, what really sealed the coffin for originality, or just being yourself really, is the unfortunate amount of hate you could get while doing something you love. i get that we could just do our own thing and not listen to those people, but if i want to share something i like doing, i would appreciate at least some positive interactions, if at all.

What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us.

Most ppl r so afraid 2 think for themselves and 2 miss out dat like sometimes u just have 2 learn to combine and create like be urself ur authentic self u don't HAVE to fall into a category/fall under a label and/or follow something specifically to a T 2 fit in becuz that's not how u should live ur life, be who U wanna be NOT what someone else thinks u should be

It's so sad how a lot of people can't have individuality, like wdym you have to make a tiktok saying "can we make x trendy again? I don't wanna wear y this summer "? Like... Girl, just wear it! No one's stopping you.

Why do people care so much about trends? I never look at trendy clothes I simply wear whatever I want.
If i go to the mall and see something cute, I'll wear it.
Same if i thrift my clothes.

There's no way it is that hard to build your own opinions and tastes

And it's worse when you see, those videos of emo and scene kids being relentlessly bullied for being different, and the worst part those moments were recorded and put on the internet fully cementing the promise that being different will cost you

I really appreciate your point—you’re right that even repetition, when done intentionally, can be a form of resistance. But that’s actually what I was trying to get at: when we’re no longer repeating by choice, but out of habit or pressure.
It’s not that I’m bothered by things being done before—I’m bothered when a person can’t speak from themselves anymore, when every word feels like an echo of something they never lived.
I’m not chasing forced originality—I just want authenticity. I want to see the person behind the trend, not just the template they followed.
