.
As a recent high school graduate, I was given the chance to choose any gift my heart desired. I picked something unforgettable: a ticket to see Heathers: The Musical. And let me just say—it hits different when you’re seventeen.
Here’s my take on the show.
The West End version of Heathers felt like a completely new experience compared to the one starring Barrett Wilbert Weed. It wasn’t just a rehash—the script had been reimagined with more creative flair and comedic energy. I found it to be a funnier take overall, likely due to the increased interaction between characters.
Costume Highlights: Each Heather brought her own style to the stage:
Olivia Holt (Heather Duke) wore a green scrunchie paired with a box-braided ponytail.
Elizabeth Teeter (Heather McNamara) rocked voluminous curly hair with a yellow bow.
McKenzie Kurt (Heather Chandler) had a bold curly half-up ponytail crowned with the iconic red scrunchie.
Lorena Courtney (Veronica Sawyer) kept the signature blazer-and-skirt combo—it’s such a staple look for the role and a curly half up ponytail with a blue bow.
Set Design & Production Details: The set design stood out, especially how seamlessly the cast transitioned between scenes—sometimes you could actually see them hustling to rearrange props mid-performance! Backgrounds were reused creatively across scenes, suggesting a smart use of space and resources. With the musical gaining more popularity, the budget seems to have grown, adding polish to the production.
A Little Behind-the-Scenes Magic: Toward the end, I noticed something interesting—a reflection on the left side of the stage where a special effects person flashed two fingers through the window. Not entirely sure what it meant, but it was a neat peek behind the curtain. Also, working as a Broadway usher must be such a cool job—watching amazing shows like this up close, even if you don’t get a seat!
Take a look at these visuals comparing the West End take on Heathers with the original—costumes, staging, and character vibes all get a fresh twist!
Costumes: The skirt are different pattern it also look like a lot of shoulder pads and different hair accessories nothing really changed for Jd and Veronica costumes other than the characters hair but that just the actors/actress natural hair/haircut.
Stage Design/Props: The stage feels bigger than the original—no more semi-circle, now it’s a custom Westerberg High staircase on wheels that turns into windows. There's a new balcony for scenes like “Big Fun.” Props got an upgrade too: loved the 3D glasses during Heather’s visions—a nod to the OG film at the funeral scene. Kurt and Ram carry matching black croquet mallets as ghosts with Heather Chandler, keeping the mallet legacy alive.
One standout moment: in “Shine a Light,” the books light up! Literal book-shaped lights glowing in the audience, which gives the scene an immersive, almost surreal vibe. Such a cool touch. I do miss the car and TV props—they added a fun layer. But props like the more realistic 7/11 (less pink, more gritty) help balance things out.
Songs/Dance: No “Blue Balls”—total letdown for fans. “You’re Welcome” isn’t a crowd favorite, but Kurt (Xavier McKinnon) wore a tie, nodding to the “suit and tie” lyric from the original.
“Candy Store” choreography was a lot—felt like throwback TikTok dances. I miss the fierce skirt swishes and bold hand moves.
“Big Fun” didn’t live up to its name either. Where was the foot stomping and those wild, playful hand movements? It felt flat compared to past productions Front left seats during “The Me Inside of Me”? Kerry Butler (Ms. Fleming) might improv with you. Mine got a wild riff on divorce and gorilla furries with a bald guy. Chaos, but iconic.
New West End-only song “Never Shut Up Again” nails Heather Duke’s queen-bee ambitions. Also, Casey Likes (JD) crushed “Freeze Your Brain”—his range was insane.
I would recommend seeing Heathers the West End Musical in New York at the New World Stages if your just visiting or live in the area up until January, 25, 26 high demand they also have shows in London Idk how that going. Excited that Heather is now being called a Cult Classic if you like Mean Girls The Musical, And Juliet and Back To The Future The Musical this is worth the watch its dark humor mixed with adultery and fun it's everything you'd expect to see if you loved the 80s classic with Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.
