Why are there no more regular/normalized underground cities?

You see them so often when looking at middle east countries and turkey back in the bronze age. But nothing of that sort has happened since the iron age.

We have the power, the ability but it hasn't happened since like 2000BC. I wanna have a metropolis under the surface of the earth, going out into the open being a weird thing for them.

I think it would be badass
