Today's hip hop blog post lol

So I don't talk about hip hop much because I have limited exposure to it, but I really enjoy some hip hop music and it's just such a cool kind of creativity with sampling, fun rhythms, and all kinds of rhyming.  All you rockers and punkers can judge if you want LOL.

I started listening to hip hop in 2001, and at the time Nelly, Jay-Z, Ja Rule, and a few other contemporary artists dominated the radio. At the time I had never heard anything like it before and thought it was a blast.

But I already got kind of tired with hip hop around 2002-2003 mostly because of Eminem being so popular. I also couldn't stand 50Cent and some of the other acts in the 2000s and I had ventured mostly into rock music instead.  The only hip hop artists that excited me for years after that were Nicki Minaj and Rihanna (who is mostly pop).  I also fucking hated Drake and I still do; his rap sucks, his style is wack, and he is overrated for no good reason.

For a brief period in the 2020s I had very limited access to the internet so I started listening to radio a lot.  And I found a local hip hop channel with new music that blew me away (especially BIRTHDAY by Saweetie, and Paint The Town Red by Doja Cat).  Wow there are so many more female rappers than there were in the early 2000s.

So I recently started going back and exploring hip hop more. Saw Nelly and a few other older artists live. Started listening to new stuff like 21 Savage, SexyyRed, etc. I think hip hop is having an interesting moment.  A lot of really stripped down instrumentation makes for a real gangsta sound. Personally I think it's refreshing to hear  something tougher and meaner again (in stark contrast to wack late 2010s shit like hotline bling blech).  Some new artists are really staying away from the overdone autotune as well.

Do you guys like hip hop music?  Any favorite artists?  Seen anyone live?  Ever recorded anything yourselves?

I wrap up this blog post by saying I was in the mood today to listen to some old Nelly tracks and ended up finding out he had a group back in the day called St. Lunatics!  You can hear this whole album free here: https://audiomack.com/st-lunatics/album/free-city.  Hope your ears enjoy lol.

I've never listened to hip hop on purpose and I have a very small knowledge of the genre and therefore understanding what is hip hop and what isn't. But generally, we have this genre of music called "Polish rap" which surprisingly, sometimes is actually hip hop, as far as my understanding goes. There's just not enough rapping to call it a rap, although the "mood" is similar. However, as I said I have very small understanding of the genre and it might be just my friends calling it that way while it's not correct bleh bleh bleh..

Oh wow that's really cool; it's always amazing to me how global the genre seems to be
