superman thoughts

okay, so i pretty much only post supernatural on my tumblr, but i feel like posting other stuff on here! today, other stuff means superman.

i'll try my best to be vague, but, potential spoilers ahead!

right off the bat, i would totally recommend you all go watch it - it is such a stellar film, and palatable even for those who aren't big fans of comic books.

and for people who are fans, there are so many fun things to look out for, so many nods and cameos and references!

the fashion in which james gunn is weaving together the DCU is masterful and feels so akin to how comics really work! each piece of media works individually as a strong, independent force so there's no pressure to do homework (like is a common complaint with the competition, the MCU), but they all come together smoothly, leaving you with minimal gaps but enough wiggle room to come up with your own theories between projects! you're allowed to pick and choose based on whichever characters you do and don't like without feeling any FOMO.

though, i will say if you aren't watching superman, you're totally missing out!

my brother and i were nearly moved to tears multiple times.

david corenswet delivers a more than capable performance, exercising superman's humanity in a way that is soooo refreshing after henry cavill's stiff man of steel. i read that, when interviewed, corenswet described his superman as not invincible and even scared at some point - he can be beaten (paraphrasing) and i couldnt agree more. i also couldn't appreciate this direction with the character more, either!

rachel brosnahan is literally lois lane, that's all i can really say. she's charming, rebellious, righteous, intelligent and professional, but we also see a lot of vulnerability in a way that doesn't paint her out to be the damsel in distress. it's very important to me that lois is not portrayed that way, because lois has made such a departure from her 30s-40s counterpart. lois is capable and brave, and often putting herself into the line of fire to help out and save the day, which is all there in the movie. i was very pleased.

nathan fillion as green lantern may trigger a little bit of deja vu if you're familiar with the dcamu, except this time around -rather than voicing hal jordan- he's expertly capturing guy gardner's arrogant, brash, cocky attitude. he's a total asshole, and you love to see it! three cheers for bowl cuts!

i also have to quickly say that edi gathegi totally got a redemption as mr terrific, which is very well deserved after a... disappointing showing in xmen first class as darwin. i could not have asked for a better representation of one of the coolest comic book characters of all time!

the movie, aesthetically, is a wonder. vibrant and bright, not afraid to be comic book accurate at the expense of being cheesy (another common complaint with marvel movies). david and rachel resemble clark and lois so much its almost uncanny, though i think their spectacular performances and chemistry also add to this effect.

its like a comic book come to life, seriously, i could not ask for more!

but i need more, like, now!!!

the nods and world building is so subtle, some of it is very much 'blink-and-you'll-miss-it', but it is leaving me fiending for more of james gunn's story telling!

for example, my brother pointed out to me that in the hall of justice, there is a massive mural depicting what i assume to be a gaggle of classic golden age heroes, though i only caught wildcat.

this, of course, is teasing a justice society instalment! wouldn't that be epic?

wildcat, of course, means dinah lance -the first black canary-, which means dinah laurel lance, which means the birds of prey and green arrow!

since the batman film we've been teased with is titled 'brave and the bold', i wouldn't be surprised if green arrow made an appearance.

i also wonder if metamorpho's appearance could signal content surrounding or including the outsiders - perhaps indicating a fall out between batman and the justice league at some point?

do you see what i mean when i said it gives you wiggle room to come up with your own theories? yep. im brainstorming.

i have a lot of thoughts, but i think i'll save all my theories surrounding where i think the DCU is headed for another blog post.

oh, and as for the final scene in the fortress of solitude, all i will say is that i am so ready for supergirl.
