I messed up trying to get the best ending in Cave Story

I played Cave Story for the first time probably 7 years ago. I got only the bad and normal ending. I wasn't 100% satisfied with that, until this month, I decided to replay it.

I played normally at first. I remembered some things and missed some others.

I got to the Sand Zone, and encountered Curly Brace. I did her fight, and after that, I traded weapons.

Then, I remembered something.

I shouldn't have done that, should I? I searched on how to get the best ending, and yep. I screwed up a lot. I saved the game after trading.

I was worried, because there is only one save slot I used (I'm using doukutsu-rs). I had to search for a save file editor, because there is NO WAY I will waste my time replaying it again until that point.

The save file editor that I used (and worked) is CaveSaveEdit Pro.

I spent probably half an hour to reset everything from the Sand Zone. Replacing the weapon with the original wasn't enough. I had to look for flags and disable them.

The flags are:

  • Currently have a Puppy on your back
  • Curly not in sand
  • [set when Curly fight starts]
  • Told Curly you won't kill the Mimigas
  • WEAPON - Machine Gun
  • Can get Hajime
  • ITEM - Hajime
  • Current Puppy is Hajime
Then, I have to delete Puppy from the inventory, and teleport Quote to Arthur's House manually.

Now everything is good. I chose NOT to trade weapons. Curly, you have no idea what happens when we do that.

Actually, I've always gotten the best ending, and specifically on my first playthrough like 10 years ago, I did it with the machine gun...you don't NEED the best weapon in the game, it's just preferable. Trading does not lock you out of the ending, letting booster or curly die does.

You just reset everything over a hunch :p

Huh. Everyone advised to keep the Polar Star. I thought it would be beneficial.
If that's the case, well then. It's not like I did too much to revert the changes.
I do know that I also shouldn't do what you said. I didn't with no issues, and I got the Iron Bond.

Although, I'm currently stuck with the bosses after the Balcony.

how's this save going??? Are you managing to get the good ending?

The save file is fine (so far).

Not yet. Currently, I rescued two of the puppies.
