So I found this article and due to my current relationship with my mother I found it very interesting:
https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20211201-family-estrangement-why-adults-are-cutting-off-their-parents
Anyone else "estranged" from their parents or considering it?
My mother moved to Arizona in 2013, and I haven't seen her since. Mind you my first daughter was born in 2014 and I had my second daughter in 2020 and married in 2021. She was not interested in returning for any of those things, nor did she seem to care about any of them other than having pictures of the grand-kids to show. She wont even talk to the girls on the phone, too busy with whatever drama she wants to talk about at the time to stop and talk to a child.
This post isn't about how sad it is that my mother has pretty much walked out of my life. But the article talks about adult children pretty much completely cutting their parents out of their lives. Some due to childhood mistreatment but a lot also due to political, religious and lifestyle difference.
While my mother has been pretty much uninvolved in my life for the last 7 years (or longer) I have considered completely cutting the cord. Most of the time when I do talk to her it is very stressful for me and completely changes the mood of my day. Her and I have very different political believes and while in the past this wouldn't have been a problem -- agree to disagree -- that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. And on top of that the only thing she seems to want to talk about is not me, my family or herself and husband, but these political issues that we do not agree on.
So while the article says, "But while improved mental health and perceived increased freedom are
common outcomes of estrangement, Pillemer argues the decision can also
create feelings of instability, humiliation and stress." As well as feeling isolated, and grandchildren/grandparents missing a relationship. I feel like I have more stress when I do talk to her. She doesn't try to have a relationship with my children or me really. I don't feel like I would be missing much other than the stressful political arguments.
So I was wondering what are other peoples thoughts on this?
