a lil rant about disabilities

Just so you know:

Hi! I'm Fredd. I wouldn't currently consider myself to be disabled in any way (and am super grateful, of course.), so if you decide not to listen, i understand. Although, if it makes it any better (which is probably wont, but whatever), i'll most probably have to use mobility aids like hard plastic braces (i'm not sure of their material, it's just not the soft fabric ones lmao) to walk sometime in the future (i'm talking late 20s, early 30s)

01) Accessibility should be everywhere.

whether it is to accommodate physical or mental disabilities, accessibility should be everywhere. It makes it confusing why it isn't, considering accessible options (most of the time), can be used by everyone, regardless if they have disabilities. Think of larger bathroom stalls, handrails, the buttons to open doors. A lot of things which not only make it a whole lot easier for disabled folks, but also people who are younger, and aren't tall enough to reach door handles, or claustrophobic people who find the smaller stalls overwhelming. While being a child, or claustrophobic isn't necessarily a disability, it helps them a whole lot too :D

This brings me to my second argument.

02) the entire reason I made this blog.

I was attending this event (but for mourning I guess), which was significant in Shi'a Muslim history. I was there with my family, and the event is set up like a parade, or protest (but that is NOT what we were doing). The date was set up as per religious guidelines. On the other side of the road, my family spotted a protest for disability pride. My father thought it may cause conflict (he thought it was just pride, although this was in July), as many know Islam is against pride. After looking on it more, we found out it was for disability pride, to which my father said really horrible things to, thinking they were affiliated with the LGBTQ2S+ movement.

It really made me think.

Do people really not know what disability pride is?

To clear it up, disability pride is in no way connected to LGBTQ2S+. It's people simply looking for accessibility and more representation. I guess some may find it strange that they want to celebrate something negatively impacting their daily lives. But if you really think about it, something that big in their lives makes people seek others like them. My favourite example of this is deaf culture. Hearing loss, a sensory disability has brought together many people to find different ways to communicate and learn. Why wouldn't you celebrate that?? Think of the newest language: Nigerian sign language. It was made by deaf CHILDREN. What would happen if they were just shunned to the outskirts because of their differences??

I think that's enough for that argument.

03) to stop using disabled people as just a major party to pity.

This one may be less obvious, but you know how some people are like "I'm grateful I fell, because some people can't even walk" or something? I just feel like that's putting disable people even lower than what society has put them as. It makes them seem like an object others compare themselves to, to just feel better. I think it's just really toxic. Like, I understand you should be grateful, but maybe don't put others down to do so??

I feel like people on SpaceHey are really awesome and already know like all of this, I just need to rant a little, as someone who has a few disabled friends, and sees these impacts :DD

If you want to add on, go ahead, my fingers are tirieddzz
