I think throwing together a blog post with my thoughts concerning the weekly new comics might be a fun idea. I'll be listing the books as I read them and only really discussing the ones I have strong thoughts on because I read too many new release books to write about each one every time. There WILL be spoilers, so let this serve as your warning.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Nation #8
I am rather glad we got to see Honeycutt, Angel, and Fugitoid in this issue. The Stockman story was also charming. But, regardless, I can't help but feel disappointed by how disconnected these remaining bits of the original IDW era are to the central story Jason Aaron is telling. It also feels a bit like most of these stories are more or less just tying up any loose ends left and are going to just lead to these characters being completely forgotten in a few years. Deeply sad to me as someone who fell in love with TMNT because of this universe.
Absolute Superman #9
Absolute Ra's al Ghul is so freaking cool. His updated facial hair, his swagger, the confidence he has when his life is threatened. I am mildly obsessed. The more exciting story aspect to this issue is, of course, the Father Box being in the hands of the Omega Men. Clearly they have connections to Darkseid somehow between that and their name and I expect we'll see that come to fruition sometime soon.
Action Comics (Vol 1) #1088
I am genuinely extremely pleasantly surprised at how much I am loving the Mark Waid Superboy stuff in Action Comics. I've never been a terribly big fan of the idea of Clark as Superboy. It feels like it diminishes the impact of his full appearance in Metropolis as Superman. But, I cannot deny the joy and charm of this series as a whole. There's something fundamentally classic Spider-Man here, believe it or not, and is honestly doing that better than most Spider-Man comics.
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight: A League for Justice #1
I am not much of a fan of the original Gotham By Gaslight story. I do love the Mignola and Russell art, but the story itself felt very rushed and half-baked. But, these sequels have really quite surprised me. I really love the bickering and new variations on the Justice League members here. Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman's friendship comes across very strongly. I also loved the reference to Jong-Li as the first wielder of the Starheart (Alan Scott's) Power Ring. Alan Scott here is also just a bundle of fun as a confidence man who uses a hot air balloon. Plus, who doesn't love friendly, local cowboy sheriff Superman?
Supergirl (Vol 8) #3
This series is everything a fan of DC's Silver Age would want. And this issue really takes the Super part of Supergirl's name and shows why she fits within the Superfam. Her immediate forgiveness and offer of a second chance to Lesla-Lar at the end of the issue is just pure Super. The cliffhanger with Kara facing trial in Kandor is extremely exciting. This book is so much fun.
Trinity: Daughter of Wonder Woman #2
As much as I have been enjoying Tom King's time on Wonder Woman, his backups with Diana's future daughter, Lizzie, are certainly the highlight of the run. This miniseries is an extension of them, featuring 3 versions of Lizzie at different points in her life, coming together to stop some sort of timeline disaster. The plot is less important and really just serves as setup to put these characters in varying points in DC's history. This issue puts teen Lizzie with Jason Todd when he was Robin. She loses her Robin Corgi and they have to go down to the sewers to retrieve him. There's loads of jokes at Jason's expense and the whole thing is just a bundle of fun. "Abso-Robin-lutely" is officially a new addition to my vocabulary.
Fantastic Four (Vol 8) #1
The Fantastic Four are one of my favorite aspects of the Marvel Universe. And for the last nearly four years, the Ryan North run with the team has been one of my favorite titles to follow. He is not yet finished with the team, but the book has been relaunched in order to capture new readers in time for the movie next week. This arc kicked off to one hell of a new story. The team has been split apart and send to various points in time by Doctor Doom. Now they must find each other. Plus it has the Thing fight dinosaurs. What else could you want??
