i recently watched kpop demon hunters. i had seen some trailers and people raving about the movie for a while but i kinda brushed the movie off at first. the title can be cringy for some but i dove in to see if the animation and storyline would charm me like the edits i was seeing on my tiktok algorithm.

my favorite character is mira. i feel like i relate to her emotions and sensibilities. i love how much she deeply cares for the girls in her own way. zoey is super cute and stylish !! not to mention rumi. im a good sucker for magical girl storylines and musical transformations. this movie was like a little treat to me in early high school haha.
\
the other areas of this movie i loved were the korean nodes to culture, food, songs, and customs. seeing behind the scenes work, storyboard drawings and panels as well as notes from koreans who have seen/and or worked on the film made the whole project seem very rooted and fantastic. the original generations of the demon hunters and their song they sing in the intro gives me goosebumps.

the only gripes that i have with this movie are with the studio and netflix. the fact that we were robbed of over half the movies run time and integral plot development makes me so mad !! i would have loved to sit for a 3hr movie. i am kinda optimistic that we are getting a sequel from the ending of the movie and the general feelings of both hype over this new ip, and disappointment with the cut material.

I actually have a completely different theory about this movie. I don’t think it should be seen just at face value there’s a much deeper meaning beneath the surface. To me, it aligns closely with the reality of K-pop culture and the industry behind it.
I’ve written more about it on my blog, so if you’re interested, check it out and let me know your thoughts

ughhh yes the movie was so amazing. i too brushed off the movie for some time, probably because i'm not that much of a big fan of kpop and am not too deep into kpop fan culture, so i wasn't too sure if those aspects would've lessened how enjoyable the movie is for me.
i think it's easy to assume the movie would prioritize to base itself around pop culture, trends, and add references to that culture (without any depth to it) instead of the actual writing of the movie. but when giving the movie a chance, you quickly realize how not just the writing of the story is actually pretty decent & there is care put into the characters, but also how meaningful its references to kpop & its culture and pop culture in general are. and also i loved the songs (especially huntrix's)!!!
loved all the characters but i think i have a bit of favoritism towards and/or softer spot for mira because of the things you've said about her here!! i also have to agree that i wished there was more content in the movie for the sake of development and expansion on what was already shown. but in general, i found the movie much more enjoyable than i thought!!!
i'm genuinely surprised to see how many non-kpop fans like this movie !! i was expecting very stereotypical portrayals of kpop culture but im happy that we got this version :) hopefully we get that sequel so more lore and worldbuilding can be done.

I was surprised by how much fun I had watching this movie. Def not the best movie I've seen, but far from the worse.
Was happy to see an actually decent animated for once. They seem rare to come by these days.
