THE DEATH OF THE HUMAN SOUL

The other day, I was talking with a friend of my parents while she was giving me a ride in her car. I don’t remember why, but we started talking about artificial intelligence. I quickly realized that we had completely different points of view, I didn't started to hate her because of it, but because what came out of her mouth contributed to the deepest kind of misery that humanity can face in current times.

She said that in the workplace, humans would lose their value, since people would prefer machines that don’t need to be paid and can do everything faster. As much as that saddened me, I knew she was right about that. However, she made the terrible mistake of bringing art into the conversation, understanding art as any form of creative expression (literature, drawing, music, photography, sculpture…).

She chose to use my dream of becoming a writer as an example. According to her, it’s not worth my time to write stories or come up with ideas for my works, since I can easily use AI to do it all for me and benefit from it without having to put in any effort. Every time I heard her reduce art to the monetary gain one can get from it, ignoring everything else, it broke my heart to imagine the great artists of the past and what the future holds for humanity.

I tried to explain to her that art is something human beings NEED, especially in these times when everything seems to lack meaning. Art is a way to give meaning to the world around us through the expression of the human soul’s beauty. If you take away a person’s soul and turn them into a machine that only acts to make money and consume, the world will eventually collapse, because we’re tampering with the most beautiful aspects of existence: life and death. You can’t reduce a human to a machine that neither feels nor expresses.

When I told her that I would never use AI no matter how much more money I could earn by doing nothing, she gave me this arrogant look that honestly made me feel sorry for her, and frustrated, knowing that there are thousands of people who think like her. I explained that I create my stories by pouring my soul and purest essence into them, trying to highlight the beauty of what I feel, live, and imagine, something a machine could never do. It’s true that AI can do it faster and IMITATE it, but it lacks the one essential thing needed to create (not just produce): a soul.

What disgusted me the most was when she proudly said that the anniversary gift she gave her husband, a song, was made entirely with AI. I held back from telling her how pathetic I thought that was, and that if my partner did the same for me, I’d divorce them that very day. It would feel like an insult: creating something using the main enemy of humanity today, DEHUMANIZATION and MEANINGLESSNESS. What’s the damn point of giving a gift to the person you love most without putting your love and essence into it?

I was also horrified to learn that her own daughter dreams of becoming a musician. Poor girl.

If this is the world that is coming, I’d rather live trying to create some hope and beauty or die if those two cease to exist in the future, no matter how hard I try to revive them.

Maybe, in order to save ourselves from this terrible future that awaits us and to give meaning to life and death, we must turn ourselves into a work of art?

。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。

the AI conversation makes my skin crawl. good on you for standing your ground. the bit about her anniversary gift genuinely shocked me, much of the value of a gift comes from the thought and effort that goes into it. there was perhaps some thought, but where was the effort in her gift? revolting!

it reminds me a lot of arguments I have with my own grandfather. he's a man I admire, very intelligent and someone who throughout my life has pushed me to be cultured and learn the arts. imagine my heartbreak seeing him in his old age describe AI as his best friend. I don't understand what's happening with him, nor will he listen to my appeals. he's convinced he's found an equal to discuss God and philosophy with, but I can tell it's rotting his brain.

I'm very sorry about your family friend.

AI is purely meant to aid humans, not replace them. Art is not art without the feeling and meaning behind it. Artificial intelligence cannot replace that essence. I agree that eventually AI has a very good chance at replacing almost everything, but that doesn't mean we should promote it. AI scientists themselves are starting to not know how AI works -their own creations are starting to LEARN. I see all the AI art on social media platforms, and I have to say; I am disgusted. You want something pretty to look at??? You want to FEEL something within the art??? You cannot do that with AI. You can trick your brain into believing there is something because that is what we are used to. But is that true? Is that story you feel in the "painting" real? No.

Honestly, dunno if what I wrote makes sense, but I agree with you, and it literally makes me feel unwell.

I agree with you. The soul of a man live thank to hobbies, passions. So what would happen if we will lose them, if a machine will steal the activities that keep us alive? I don't really comprehend why art, generally, has to be created by AI.
I don't know if my thoughs will be accepted at all, but here's what I think.
I believe AI can be a good supporter, but to me it seems that it has come out of hand. AI learns from humans, but, now more than ever, our species is unlearning. If AI can do everything, what will be our abilities? I've seen a lot of people around me being helped by AI for meaningless tasks. If AI will do my maths, a test, for me, what will I learn? Out of school, how I'll do my job? Even in the case AI will do it, too, what I'll be supposed to do with my life? Nothing?

100% agree! AI was meant to aid humans. Now my classmates are always switching to and from ChaptGPT and other AI platforms just to find out what 9 x 4 is. It's purely disgusting watching the people around me rot their brains out with this "helpful" technology. And programers don't think the AI we have is enough?? I believe I saw an add for ChatGPT making videos now.

Sadly, ai do much more than videos. In my school we were forced to use it for a homework.
Another thing to say... I've seen some ppl using it just for texting their friends, like they don't know how to answer. I don't know what to think anymore.

I enjoy Ai but I agree that AI is supposed to be a tool. It's not supposed to replace. Although AI can replicate art, art made by humans actually contains the effort and love into it. You know, llike, the humanness in an art.

AI originally (from my understanding) was supposed to be a sort of rough-around-the-edges assistant for quick responses/summaries for topics. It was not created for the sole purpose of creating art of any form, but eventually made its way into that realm.
I am not a supporter of AI art, as it puts people out of jobs. Do I think sometimes its funny to laugh at and clown on from time to time? Sure, as long as it isn’t used for genuine purposes (such as branding a product or illustrating a book). I have glazed over a few AI books, and all have one thing in common: it tends to be very PG-13 (as most AI chatbot assistants do not have the capacity to do drastic, 18+, anything potentially dangerous, or morally risky, which all are sometimes important components to a story). These books are almost always catered towards a younger audience, and even books that are less catered to kids, tend to be lackluster.

Now, reffering back to the point that Chatbots are in fact tools to *help* you, or at least, were the original intent of them, I personally believe it is okay to use ai as a helpful guide to understanding something or getting a creative spark going (such as: “What should I draw to get out of art block?” Or “What are the things to avoid whilst writing”), but not to write or draw an entire thing for you.

Although, I personally think art is a very personal thing. It comes from the soul, and is, serious or unserious, apart of you in a way. It is an expression of how you uniquely see the world and imagine things. It’s a beautiful way to show people your perspective, as there is no other way to do it besides art (and I don’t just mean art as visual arts, musical, written, etc!).

AI does not have a one-set perspective. Its perspective is a collection of general knowledge given from other humans and can even be altered by the user with simple commands. It cannot provide unique thought processes, it does not have a hand to think about each note, word, chip of clay, or paint stroke. It just simply gathers what has been fed to it over the years. It does not know human nuances, it does not think, it does not breathe, it does not feel. It is a stone cold chunk of metal with servers, wires, and data bases. It does not care about how you feel about its existance and works. Art is not just about monetary gain, it is apart of you, even if you do sell art/music/etc, it still was produced by you, therefore its apart of you.

So in conclusion, while I can see where your friend can think these things if I think in a non-biased way, I disagree with them.

haven’t we already seen ai interbreeding or atleast talked about a risk of it?? what i mean is that it’s learning from itself, meaning it won’t get better (which i hope is/will be the case). i hate ai and sadly i may end up having to use it in my collage course… EVEN THO ITS AN ART COURSE?!?!???
in the uk there isn’t a specific ai law i believe, so there is bound to be loopholes and abuse of ai usage.

Also poor girl, she has to grow up with a mother that possibly doesn’t believe in her because of ai??? it has an impact on our daily lives whether we like it or not.

don’t listen to that woman, write if you want to don’t let ai stop you. besides it won’t ever come up with an original idea cuz it is learning off of us. ai’s creativity is based on data and if we haven’t thought of something ai certainly can’t.

the future is such a scary thing to think abt right now

The fact that ai is being used in school is one of the worst thing nowadays. It make me think of how it replace us even from the start. How do we learn if ai do everything?

People often forget that AI use art published on public website and if artist sundently stopped doing any shape of art it would be rapidly repetitive and uniteresting.

(I love how this blog article is written btw! )

AI is like a parasite that feeds off humans in order to destroy them. I really hope artists don’t lose motivation and keep fighting for what they love and for what will save the world. Thank you for your comment, I'm really glad you like the way I write! hehehe ;-)

Can't imagine spending enough time with a person to get married and the anniversary gift I get from them is something they put five seconds of thought in. It's the lazier equivalent of getting a gift card to a grocery store.

People around are letting Ai to take the prove - you can't let something be out there controlling the life ; the warming one we used to live in peacefully back then in 2019 2018 2016 2015 -i do romanticize these periods so much , you can see how others start to react less and less - they are numbing themselves to the point they make others feel lonely enough to depend on connecting with an Ai - Ai can hug you when people are pushing you away ,and that's not a good thing to hear but guess what we people made that to happen, we don't love each others
We just love the attention; the art of empathy, the art of being sensitive to create , the art of being hugged by someone's words to make your thoughts feel less tougher ; but no people just can't be themselves and providing that depth anymore.. so some of us sees how Chat gpt helps in such heartbreaking situations .
Most of us are tired of ending up with people who don't think twice before speak , I think Ai is a hot cup tea are made for us after we return back home and there is no one to be able to feel us .
And eventhough it might be there people but still this yearning to be felt would always be out there draining us , if people were made different we would never let the Ai take the lead slowly .
It depends on us on our hearts before anything

What a beautiful message... It's ironic how the technologies that are supposed to make us feel more connected are actually making us more isolated. It's so sad to see how some people prefer to interact with artificial intelligence rather than with real people. We're becoming less and less willing to connect, and we're growing less empathetic and sociable. It's like a silent epidemic of loneliness and despair. I remember that in April there was a major blackout across the Iberian Peninsula, it was so beautiful to see everyone gathering in parks to talk and play, helping each other out as neighbors and forming a sense of community without being glued to their phones. I really hope that one day we can find a balance between the digital world and healthy interpersonal relationships. Thank you for your comment, and sorry for the late reply <3

It's so sadly things has come this way. I've made experience of what you have written: people are so much distant, even if they're one to each other. In some of the group I'm part, silence kept growing. Time after time, it has became the main sound. Luckily, not everyone, but the most have fallen, spending hours on they're own phones. When it happens, there is nothing more than boredom, it feels like they've chosen to be empty, with a heart that is somehow locked.

my dad says that he'd rather me get an C with me writing myself, rather an A by using AI. and ever since i stopped using it, my grades went from nearly failing to nearly all As, because having an ChatGTP shovel slop into your brain isnt the same as LEARNING it.

AI will never have a place in the creative world, other than money hungry slop. I hope this whole AI bullshit becomes obsolete sooner rather than later

Trying to learn and risking failure instead of letting your work and education fall entirely on artificial intelligence is something admirable today, since most people would do the opposite. I don't think this nightmare will end anytime soon, but I hope they start regulating it and that people become aware of what we're doing to the world and our existence.

I once told Chat gpt you write better than me somehow then it replies: there are alot of things I am saving in my memory but you are the one who has the feeling and can create a soul to that poem - so I thought how the poems we can see it writes can be so perfect but when you read it - there is sth missing inside like you can't deny that feeling , using it was never wrong but only in a way that can provide us helpful hand but not to become our replaced mind, art is born with a human touch and it will never be something secondary in this life - Only people who don't value it they live on the shallow of anything those people are becoming dangerous and like a disease for us the artists and the creaters THE CREATIVES .

Oh my God this reminds me of my best friend who was graduating as valedictorian. She was hella brilliant in her own right, but she was constantly using chatGPT on assignments. I was lowk really uncomfortable with that, but I knew that she was driving herself crazy trying to be in the top place and she would have been really upset of she wasn't, so I didn't say much. But when the salutatorian was preparing her speech, I noticed my friend was really laid back about her own speech and I asked when she was going to start writing it. I kid you not she waggled her fingers at me and said "Chat GPT!" all sing-songy. Admittedly, I'm not proud of the face I made when hearing that, but it just hit me in such a gross way- The opportunity to speak to the people who worked with you and struggled beside you for 4 years straight and you don't have the decency to even try being sincere? It was so icky to me and the whole time she was giving her speech I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I feel like this is the new way of being an impostor, both to yourself and to others. I'm not saying your friend is a bad person, but it's very sad how she could have given up the first place to someone who truly deserved it and genuinely worked hard for it. It also breaks my heart to know that the speech was something mechanical, without any real value, what could have been a beautiful and memorable moment was reduced to trying to seem impressive through a sad machine.
