I've been getting into philosophy these days, and I found a question that I quite like -- when is something considered to be artwork?
It's something especially important in the modern day, with AI images being on the rise and such. Even before generative AI rose to such heights, in the modern and postmodern contexts it was beginning to grow difficult to classify art. There are so many art forms like dance, music, paintings, sculptures, photography-- but when is something classified as an artwork? is there a single definition which all art must adhere to in some way? should we consider the dadaist piece "the fountain" an artwork? if not, then why so?
I personally believe that artefacts classified as works of art by members of the art word are works of art. This classification must be motivated by an "aesthetic feeling", and the artefact itself must have an impression of the artist's intentions.
What are your views on this matter? I would genuinely love to hear your opinions.

i would say that something is considered an artwork when itās the result of an original activity through which a person expresses themselves, either in a unique way, or within certain culturally recognized boundaries, like a specific style or artistic tradition. the process matters, but the final piece (what we call the artwork) carries the trace of that expression and intention.
especially in music (in my case), we canāt fully escape our influences, but we can reinterpret them and try to be ourselves in the most original way possible.
in the case of illustration, you can see really simple artworks gaining value today ā for example, i think of brat and charli xcx. would you consider that an artwork?. to me, thereās never a single definition that all art must follow. and when such a definition seems to appear, culture usually responds by challenging it and breaking the rules.

is a very interesting opinion, I must say it made me think. I would say that no matter how simple a work of art is, if it leaves an impression on a person, it should be regarded as such.
